Hi

I am intending in installing a non split board for this. I cannot see point of having dual rcd in such a small installation.

Anyone disagree?

Martin

when i had my first year assessment for elecsa i rewired my one bedroom flat.i had three circuits in total on one rcd and my assessor told me it was non compliant and that i had to still put it on a split/split board!!

I was thinking just one for the lights.

By not having a split board I know it is contry to having the circuit arranged in an order not to cause nuisance but that the only reg if so I think I am justified in interpreting it as I have ,ie the install is so small that it is not unreasonable to have them on a single rcd

You cannot have the whole installation protected by one 30mA RCD. The regs do state this (in a roundabout way.)

If there are only 3 or 4 circuits then a CU with a standard main switch and 3 or 4 RCBO's will still work out similar in cost to a dual RCD CU.

Surely if it is not explicitly stated anywhere then I am within my rights to have one rcd protecting the whole lot after all it is not as if there is a safety issue at stake here.

I have 6 circuits;- shower, cooker, ring, appliance radial, water heater radial and lights.

Would it be really non complient and if so which reg would it be in contravention of?

I believe if anything I can meet the requirement to minimise disruption of other circuit by just putting the lights on their own rcbo. and not running through the main rcd at all.

I havent got my book to hand at the mo, but it is in there somewhere.

I wont be home for a couple of hours so ill have a look then, but maybe in the meantime, another member may be able to find something.

OK OK
I have come to my senses, opinion seems to be divided; me then everyone else. sooo, I have sent back the 8 way and the RCD and ordered a dual rcd 17th board to get the job done.

However I still am not totally convinced that the use of one rcbo on the lighting and a rcd serving the rest of the board cannot fulfil the requirements for a small flat.

I am going to get the book from the van.

Anyone up for a debate later.

Martin

You will not achieve discrimination between the 2 RCD's.

If the main RCD went then you would loose the lot.

If the lighting RCBO went, you COULD still loose the lot.

Sorry, i was meant to look that one up for you.

Yeh… about 3 quid for a new switch… But I think there’s too many wires there for you to attempt to change it yourself
