Hi

I am intending in installing a non split board for this. I cannot see point of having dual rcd in such a small installation.

Anyone disagree?

Martin

All I can find in the regs is

Division of Installation
Section 314 calls for the installation to be so divided to:
(i) Avoid hazards and minimize inconvenience in the event of a fault
(iv) Reduce the possibility of unwanted tripping of the RCD due to
excessive protective conductor currents.

It has been commonly asserted by cu manufacturers that to comply with these requirements, the circuits of an installation should not be connected to a single RCD, as this could lead to loss of supply to the entire installation in the event of a fault on one circuit, which they clain is clearly inconvenient for the user of the building. However that is not stated anywhere in the regs - or is it? Have I missed it?

Why can't I just have an RCBO on the lights straight from the main switch and a rcd controlling all the other circuits?

Any views welcome

You can.

What you cant have is an RCD main switch which then protects RCBO's etc.

Edit: Sorry, i may not have understood you earlier :D

Its me age.

How would you connect the RCBO to the RCD main switch?

I had ordered a an 8 way cu and intended using and rcd 80a switch to control the other ways in the unit other than lighting. The inputs for the rcbo for the lighting unit would be connected to the main switch using a split board kit and the output L+N to the lighting radial at the rcbo terminals.

Sound right? I know not quite. that is why I sent it back to electrifix. I need to get the job done.

But I think it can be done. However, it is more expensive than the 17th cu they do so there is no point.

What do you think?

Indeed, you could use a standard split CU with a main switch and RCD.

RCBO for the lighting on the main switch side and the rest on the RCD side with MCB's.

Yeh… about 3 quid for a new switch… But I think there’s too many wires there for you to attempt to change it yourself
