As the title says.
Old fusebox in a cabinet in kitchen, dno's board fills the cabinet, old skeleton fusebox currently located just above the board.
Is it a no no to mount the new cu on their board?

What sort of cabinet are we talking about here??

Skeleton CU's are normally only found in made for purpose semi flush ''Mantel'' metal cabinets...If that's the case, then you need to purchase a retro fit Wylex, Hager, Crabtree, etc 17th ed Skeleton CU.

......And NO you Can't mount a standard Cu within the central DNO's cutout/meter section of these cabinets!!

The old board is currently fitted in a cabinet, approx 500mm wide by 750 tall and 250 deep, the board is at the top of this cabinet, the dnos board fills the remaining part and contains the meter and cutout

That sounds very much like a metal ''Mantel Cabinet''!! Direct replacement Skeleton CU's are available to replace the old Wylex 3036 Skeleton CU....

Check with any of the bigger wholesalers. It looks as if you have a duel CU unit there, maybe one for electric central heating (storage heaters).
Wylex Hager, Crabtree and maybe others make direct replacement skeleton CU's to fit Mantel cabinets, check manufacturers on-line catalogues....

Yeah it is a duel unit, although only a handful of circuits are now used.
Cables disappear directly behind the cu plastered in.
Mounting this on dnos board would be so straightforward, such a shame i cant!

Another one I saw just last week as it happens was in a club which had an old flush con-unit (think possibly old green crabtree c50 unit?) . Anyway the new Wylex split-board had been fitted directly in front of the old con-unit. The unit covered about 3/4 of the old unit. You could still see the old door flap.

Just a thought. I've seen it done many times before. Yes, if suitable replacement can be found and can be fitted in same location..go for it.

There ARE suitable direct replacements available, .....and always has been. Just because some lazy/cheap so and so make a pigs ear of a simple CU replacement job, doesn't mean it's all right to copy him!!

Sounds like another pigs ear of a job to me!!!

Exactly..it amused me whilst waiting for my pint. I'm generally not into taking pics with phone however, if i had my phone with me on this particular occasion i would of and shown here.

You can't move their meters and board either when they're in stupid positions which mean that it's impossible to mount your new, much wider board. Just like you can't cut their meter/fuse seals...

Yeah, never do any of that.

Errrrr, the width of the replacement Skeleton CU's are governed by the width of the cabinet!!

Well i've installed 3 such Skeleton boards (Parents house, Sisters house and a friends house) 2 Crabtree boards and one Wylex board. None of them were any problem installing whatsoever!!!

I take it that you have at one time or another, just mounted a standard CU above the Mantel cupboard rather than doing the job properly with a Skeleton CU. I bet it looked wonderful in the customers house/flat!!
