Hello,
As many, I'm for expert advice. I just had an extract fan fitted in my kitchen. The make the electrician brought was Addvent, I think 6 inch fan. I realised today, sitting about 9 foot from the fan eating a meal that there was a very unpleasant cold breeze. The whole room is just not warm now but the wind caught my attention. As its been snowing & the wind is coming from the east it would have been hitting the wall the fan is installed in dead on. I walked closer & it was windy, so I held some kitchen paper & then a plastic bag near it - both blew into the room when held on one side. I videoed this & sent it to a friend who said there was something wrong.

I then went outside & you can see straight into the kitchen & the kitchen light through the fan. There is no grill on it.

I texted the electrician & she asked what would I expect as basically a hole had been made in the wall, so of course it is cold. She said she didn't know what she could do about it. I expected some level of mild draft but this is like an open window & I measured the temperature of the kitchen & it was 16 degrees even with the large radiator on full whack, with the rest of the house from 18.5 to 19 degrees.

My questions are -
  • is this really normal or is this because the fan is not the correct one?
  • can nothing really be done?
  • should I have been warned that putting in the fan would lead to a very cold room and severe draught?
I don't think the electrician sounds like she has an idea of what it can be but it looks to me that the fan is not suitable for the job.

I would never have had this fan put in if I thought I could no longer use my kitchen in comfort. I am disabled with a chronic arthritic condition that means I struggle in the cold. I am always wrapped up at the best of times. I am worried about heating the kitchen & keeping the place & me warm with effectively a hole in the wall. Can anyone provide advice on how to tackle this please? I feel a different fan is needed but what are your views? Thanks!

As far as i know an extract fan is supposed to pull air to the outside not pull air inside the house. Could it possibly be installed backwards? Good luck and hope this helps.

There are fans with backdraft shutters. These prevent the worst of the wind entering but don't fully stop it. The important size is the hole through the wall. You may be able to fit a centrifugal fan which would be better.

There should have been some sort of grille on the outside, but some are better stopping wind coming back in than others.

As mentioned, you can get fans with backdraft shutters…. Or even motorised shutters that only open when the fan is on.

The size of hole is not the important bit…. It is the speed of the fan to satisfy building regs. Measured in l/s or m3/ h (litres per second or cubic metres per hour)
Any 6” should be up to it though.
