hi all,

i am an electrician but work mostly in the industrial side of things. my dad is getting a new kitchen fitted and i am running cables for the cooker(the existing circuit is being used for the hob, i am running one in for the double oven as it is rated at 30A), moving light switches etc to lower the cost. The guy that came round to sign the papers spoke with me and said the 17th edition requires the cooker circuits and ring in the kitchen to be RCD protected(older non-rcd board is installed).

My question is does the existing cooker circuit and the ring really need to be upgraded if they are not being altered? rather than change the board i was just going to fit rcbo's- not cheap tho!

cheers in advance boys:D

er, half a dozen rcbs will cost you more than a new 17 ed board.Short reply m8 as I am off out the door.

You need to do some testing, untill you know the condition of the wiring that exists. If poor replace before you install RCDS/rcbos. Thats a properjob.

the house is relatively new (about 15-20 years) so the wiring is fine, just the board is not rcd protected. If i fit a new board tho i then need it tested which will cost more! all money lol was just wondering if circuits that were going to be untouched needed upgrading- i.e the existing cooker circuit-all thats going to happen to that is a straight swap for the hob and the ring?

ok, bud, you have already run in one new wire, that needs testing and certifying as its a new installation. I can see that you are trying to do a job on possibly zero budget, I do sympathise with you.

I take it the guy that came round was from LABC - and your not part p and you want to argue with him ?

the guy was from BnQ, haha, so isn't even a spark, but as i've not done my 17th edition yet wasn't sure u kno?!

yeh mate, i was going to just fit an rcbo to that one circuit and the others should be ok?

The original circuits can stay as they are as long as you have done no work on them, but B+Q may not guarantee their appliances if they are not rcd protected
Your new circuit will comply if there is spare capacity for the addition and the earthing and bonding are adequate
If by moving and extending the light switches, cables of the lighting circuit are buried anywhere along their route, they would also now neeed Rcd protection

The general rule may be to think of it as If you work on that circuit or alter the protective characteristics, then the alteration needs to comply with current standards

There is the other issue, although you are a trained spark, because of part p of the building regulations, work in a kitchen is considered to be in a special location and that work may be notifiable, you may not be permitted to do what you are trained to do and may find that its going to cost you for someone to inspect and test ypur work for compliance with part p after notifying building control of the work before you commence

Its become a lot more complicated nowadays than having the skill to do your job
