I've been reminded, gently, by an admin, that I should have introduced myself as a new member, so here goes. Electrically speaking, I wear two hats. Firstly, I'm a PAT tester, and with that hat on I'm an expert in a limited field. Secondly, I'm the person everyone turns to at the Church I attend when things need doing with the electrics. With that hat on, I know a little bit, but I rely on professionals for advice and for doing the work. My PhD in Physics taught me a lot of the basics about electricity, but absolutely nothing about current regulations or current practice. By joining this forum, I hope that I'll be able to learn a little more from a bunch of experts, and perhaps to get answers to some of the thorny issues that the Church faces in terms of its electrics. (The Church building was built in the late 1960s, and included state of the art features at the time - we had strip lights in the Main Hall, for example, at a time when they were very new. In the last 40+ years, things have moved on a very long way, and we are gradually updating the electrics. This summer, we've had the old strip-light fittings replaced because the ballasts had gone in most of them such that the tubes didn't strike; with more modern fittings, we'd simply have replaced the starters, but they didn't have them!)
