That could have been a very nasty situation when energised. I have seen the exact same situation before where uninsulated brass blocks were used inside an unearthed metal fitting.
Gave a certain electrician I know a bit of a wake up call when taking the fitting down with the circuit still energised.

Thank god you couldn't get it to work !

He couldn't get it to switch off......Gawd knows what would have happened if the light hadn't been on!...sticky fingers with that lot?

Hi all thanks. You’ve scared me enough to get my electrician back in. Those brass blocks were in the old fitting. Will disconnect it all now and wait for my electrician to be free.

By the way I didn’t choose that picture it just put it on automatically!

Gives a pretty sinister view of neglecting to carry out safe isolation.
His electrician could have been suffering the same fate not knowing what lurks below...

I would guess that with four brown wires and only two blue wires !
Maybe two of those brown wires are the switch loop ?
You should be able to find it with a ohm meter.

Probably used a kitchen knife, anyway......or a trowel, looking at the earth screws.

As one is twin brown the Mk1 eyeball should be enough.

Ooooh I do love an Ikea light fitting me....
My particular faves are called “Ottava”. They’re bastards.
This one looks like a “Tross” (I’m not joking), and As a replacement for a ceiling rose they’re really not too bad. Plenty of room for the requisite insulated terminal blocks or Wago-type blocks if the lighting is 3-plate.
I agree with the above comments; the circuit looks like it’s 3-plate with switch drops in double brown, which accounts for the light being on permanently.
By now I imagine OP has called a spark.
