Hi all,

New to the forum, I'm currently going down the domestic installer route, but won't be calling myself an electrician, so please don't shout at me!!

Ive done 15 years in the army after which I spent the last 7 working in intruder and fire alarms and CCTV initally on the tools but latterly as QA. I've done a little elec work, had my 16th and have just updated to 17th, (at my own expense).

i was made redundant late last year and as I've not been able to find suitable employment have gone it alone as a handy man.

I've been approached on several occasions to do some minor elec works, reposition a socket, change a light fitting etc and have until now declined as I generally suggest the customer users a registered spark and normally offer some old trade contacts only to hear later that " a mate did the work for a couple of pints."

Well I hope I'm accepted, I'm not after big works, no new builds, just the odds and ends no-one else really wants, and maybe the occasional spur if I put an alarm in.

Oh and part P is a mess and if anyone wants to offer advice on a suitable test meter, please feel free, I don't want to spend a small fortune as I doubt I will need it often, but if I do a job I'll want to do it well.

What?

You won't be calling yourself an electrician but you'll happily do electrical work no matter how small it is.

The whole domestic installer business is a complete joke - i hate it with a passion, but the people who do it are looknig for electrical work and to either trade S/E as a sparks or work as a sparks. What's the point you even doing it in the first place....5k+ for a few light fittings, really... you know you'll expand and start wiring circuits as soon as unsupected customer asks for it.

Also, you state that you'll be doing the jobs nobody else wants...theres plenty of sparks unemployed/struggling. Nobody would refuse a job no matter how small it is.

Suppose if you're going to do just what you've said in your OP then thats not much that can be really done, a few like-for-likes is no challenge. Aslong as it stays at that and you're aware of the whole class1/2 situation.

Welcome to the forum.
