Just a quick introduction from me - I'm a 49 year old living in Essex - I have no electrical qualifications but Im looking into training options and wanted some advice on what route to take. Im looking to get into renewable installations in some shape or form but Im not rigid in my goals. I just fancy a career change.

I was considering Access training but having read some other opinions Im minded to get NVQ level 2 possibly online or remotely with a view to doing level 3 in person on an evening course in September.

Any advice will be greatly received

Thanks

Simon

to be fully qualified you need level 2 then level 3 followed by NVQ3 and AM2. 3/4 years in college with practical experience thrown in.

Hey Simon.

I'm retraining at the moment aged 35. I've done City and Guilds 2365 levels 2 and 3 over the last 2 years. Currently doing the 18th edition course and starting my NVQ3 later this year. After that it will be AM2, then 2391 Inspection and Testing a little down the line.

The courses have been straightforward, I have a background in electronics and AV installation and 3 years working onsite, though I work a desk job at the moment. The hardest part I'll likely find is getting the opportunity to do portfolio work for the NVQ which can take up to 36 months. It's a long old slog..

One thing I wish I'd done sooner is the 18th edition exam - as far as I know there aren't any requirements for entry and if you take the time to learn your way around the book it'll make the other courses easier to get through.

In my opinion, apart from the EAL equivalents there are no other credible routes to becoming an electrician. No shortcuts these days, just 7k in training and another 2k in tools and then another 1k in memberships and insurances... and 3/4 years of time.
