A ring off a spur??He needs telling while its still easy to rectify not once all the works complete.

I'm not saying making a ring off a spur is acceptable but he's not finished yet, only he knows what he's doing! He might be extending the current ring main and converting the current spur. ie so the spur becomes part of the ring. Without being there you dont know.

I still say let him finish the job, if it is still wrong then make him correct it, trust me he won't do it again.

I don't like people interfering with my work whilst I am still busy, it just makes things a bit tense between you and the customer.

i have seen cables run in cavitys many times, and my old boss did it a few times when i was still doing my apprenticeship. would somebody care to clear this up for me as it appears i am wrong. i thought conduit inside a cavity wall was acceptable?

conduit through a cavity wall ie from outside to inside is perfect especially if cavity wall insulation is likely
actually running cables in cavities whether in conduit or not has always been (to my knowledge) bad practice

Ok i found this on the internet and it was written by the niceic so here goes. i have certainly learnt something from this.

Cables such as pvc/pvc insulated and sheathed cables installed in cavity walls may:

• be damaged during installation,
• be unsupported within the cavity deteriorate due to being in contact with cavity wall insulation,
• overheat due to the effects of the thermal insulation
• be attacked by flora or fauna, or
• provide a passage for water to be carried to the inner leaf.

Solution
Cables should normally not be installed in external cavity walls. If it is indeed required to install a cable in a cavity wall, a sheathed mineral-insulated copper sheathed (MICS) cable may be judged by the installation designer to be suitable for such a location.
Installing pvc/pvc insulated and sheathed cables in an external cavity wall is generally an undesirable practice as it is unlikely that all of the applicable requirements of BS 7671, the Building Regulations and the NHBC requirements listed below can be met.
Damage to cables during installation.
Obstructions in a cavity wall, such as metal wall ties or mortar projections, create a risk of unseen damage occurring to the cable sheath and conductor insulation during installation (Regulation 522-08-01 refers).
Strain on cables lacking support
Long unsupported vertical drops may place undue strain of the conductors, leading to damage (Regulation 522-08-04 refers).

If i going through to outside through a cavity i always drill at a slight angle downwards.

Thanks for all the posts. After reading them all, i have less faith in the electrician now. The reason being, he completed the ring main in the conservatory by going back over the original part of the conservatory that already has a concrete floor. He channelled out just deep enough so the cable was just below the surface of the concrete. As an eralier post says this should be in a conduit of some sort that is earthed.

Not being used to all the technical info used here, I take it the cable running in the air cavity along the outside wall should either be in a protective conduit or be channelled on the inside of the inner wall? I do understand the arguments that he should be able to finish his work first before making judgements but i will definielty keep an eye on things before plastering is done etc. He is not due back probably until next week so will have a chat then. Once again, thanks to all for their opinions/info, much appreciated.
