Hello

I got my 17th Ed certificates just over a 18 months ago and unfortunately through a total lack of employment have forgotten around 50% of what I learened !. So my problem is this. I have a UPS battery back up system, which I want to use to power 1 power circuit and 1 lighting circuit. The two options I see for circuit and earth leakage protection are as follows. What I would like to know is would either of these meet current 17th edition regulations ?.

1.) The UPS to be supplied from the normal domestic supply which is protected by a main 80A double pole RCCB and a 6A MCB for the feed into the UPS. The output from the UPS would then feed directly into a 6A double pole RCCB, which doubles as a disconect switch. From there it would feed two MCB's, one 1A for lighting and a 6A for the power circuit. There is only sufficient space in this breaker box for two single width devices. (My concern with this set up is that an earth fault in the power circuit would also knock out the lighting circuit)

2.) The UPS to be supplied from the normal domestic supply which is protected by a main 80A double pole RCCB and a 6A MCB for the feed into the UPS. The output from the UPS would then feed directly into a 16A double pole disconect switch. From there it would feed into two seperate single pole RCBO's. Again a 1A for the lighting circuit and a 6A for the power circuit. Again there is only sufficient space in this breaker box for two single width devices and so a pair of double pole RCCB's is not an option. (This is my favoured option as it provides independent earth leakage protection for each circuit. However if there were an earth fault a single pole RCBO would only isolate the Live and not the Neutral).

If someone could please help me with this problem I would be very gratefull.

Thanks
Rob

What type of UPS ?? Model etc. ( must be a blooming big un ? ) HAs it a totally isolated output?
The regulations apply to FIXED WIRING !!

Its not espeacialy large and only has an output of 670w total, which is enough for my needs. But it does have a large battery bank capable of storing enough power to run the UPS at full load for 2 hours. All UPS's have totaly isolated output's when in battery mode. But when in normal mode they just operate as straight through. I dont think any of that would affect the answer to my above question though ?. I am mearly seeking a specific answer to a specific question and I would be gratefull if we dont diversify please. Otherwise things get off course and protracted discussions develop about areas which dont affect my problem.

YES it is fixed wiring !
