Newbie question.

Electricman Dan

Details:
A lounge, and 2 bedrooms are on a RCD protected ring with a 32A fuse.

If I plug a Ipod dock into any of the lounge sockets and then plug a 240v drill into another the ipod dock turns off.

None of the fuses trip.

If I plug another 240v tool in any of the sockets and my 240v drill into another socket they both run with no problems.

???? Help

What could it be that is turning off the Ipod dock that the RCD/ 32A fuse is not picking up..

Thanks, Dan..

the high current drawn by the drill as it starts up. could affect the ipod. it's just a guess mind.

Didn't know I was allowed to!

I was weary of doing any work without any recent practical experience, except that of the training centre. Also didn't know what I was allowed to do and what I wasn't allowed to do. Also I thought I'd need my 17th Ed exam done and to get registered with a Part P body like Napit or Elecsa before I make a start (slowly, by doing domestic for friends & family). It's also a matter of confidence in ones self.

But let's not change this thread to be about me - it was you who asked the question this time :)

True.
The situation is odd because when I repeat the process in the kitchen (separate ring) the iPod thing stays on. So it's not a surge problem.

You have something there that defies logic, and engineering do not like things that are not logical, so there must be something. The common things are the ipod or the socket. Change the socket and then check, if you can for a loose connection in either the ipod itself or the plug top of the ipod
