Hi all been looking at the website for months now and I have my first NICEIC inspection tommorrow so pretty nervous its for the Domestic Installer scheme so hopefully should all go well. I've done plenty of prep and everything seems to be in place, just want to get it over and done with. Do you guys have any last minute tips that will be of help?

what Quals do you have to have to be a domestic istaller not an approved contractor? what is the diffrence? and what can a part p spark not to to a approved spark?? good luck tho

You'll get more info if you start your own thread with that question mate.

Welcome to the forums mate, and best of luck to you.

Make sure you have all your documentation and stuff ready in place to pass under his nose.
He'll ask you do do a couple of demonstrations, these will be random but some I've experienced are carrying out Ze tests, PSC & PFC along with a determination on which to record. I was asked once, what the measured figure with a PFC test relates to (i.e. the breaking capacities etc).

You'll likely be asked to illustrate your understanding of earthing systems, along with the maximum Ze that you would be permitted to achieve.
RCD tests also, with your understanding on test methods and maximum times allowed according to which test you do.

Most likely also, you would be expected to illustrate safe isolation procedure.

Thanks guys, I should be ok with it, I suppose I will have to pretend he is wearing knickers all day just to stop me crumbling haha, I spoke to him before crimbo about some of the paperwork and he seemed pretty friendly I know they're not out to get you but I just hope I dont get stuck on something stupid, last thing I need is a call ffrom the regs police!

The main thing i would say from my assessment is dont panic, theses guys are not there to catch you out.The first thing my assessor said is its not a memory test ie they want to see you can look up regs.If you are in anyway competent you should be ok and you will wonder why you paniced at all.Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Jamie

Ok guys all finished up and I passed it, I wouldn't say it was easy because it certainly gets the brain ticking but as mentioned here before, stay calm and read the regs and all will be well so long as your jobs and testing is upto scratch. He spent time talking to me about what an S in a square symbol means on RCD fitted at the origin of a TT system. So not really being an expert on TT systems did find it quite hard, like they say its only easy if you know it. Anyway he explained about it meaning selective and that that it was infact time delay, so obviously as soon as he said that I was like face-palm yeah I remember that at college but that really the only thing I sweated over. Everything else was fine he said all my testing and proceedures were spot on and safe isolation etc was all good. So just need to wait for it all to come throught the post so I can gt on with it!

Thanks DaveyD, pretty chuffed tbh good start to the year especially after having a pretty crap time last year with redundancy and a couple of non starter projects and then getting in as a subby for another firm only to be left being owd money because of his poor liasons with the clent but its all water under the bridge now.

Well done mate i remember how nervous i was and how ecstatic i was after he shook my hand and said well done! got my annual inspection this year, thinking of changing it to approved now as i have some commercial projects potentially in the pipeline...here we go again!

Well done buddy ! yer had my NICEIC annual Dec 9th with Colin Kazor the year before was with Clive Collett ! both sound guys and i found them to be friendly enough !

Thanks guys, yeah I can't think of anyone who when just starting out on their own go for the approved contractor because of the jobs that need to be seen, most people start out as a domestic installer and once out in the big wide world signing off their work and getting to grips with all the other thing that come with going it alone, after your first year you have a few decent jobs under the belt and you know what to expect with the assessment going in for the approved contractor makes sense but its a big step if your only just starting out.
