Hi folks,

Could those who had their first NICEIC Assessment, tell us about the kind of questions they were asked during the assessment and the preparation they had to do for the assessment?

This thread can be made sticky as it would be useful for newly qualified electricians wanting to be assessed.

Regards!

Bit of a tall order, as he is basically in your ear for a good four hours. It would be more a case of what he didnt ask you. However, I would say that the main theme , having spoken to others, is SAFETY. Firstly for you. Isolation procedures, he will make you explain what your going to do before he allows you to do it.
I got pulled up on not proving my voltage probe between each test.
Second big one is safety of the client, i.e. the installation. Very Hot on earthing and bonding Know your stuff here. Very hot on barriers and enclosures again safety. He will have a few roses and sockets off to see your workmanship. He will ask you about the most common faults we all find, i.e No CPC at lighting circuits. My last re wire there was one light fitting that I was asked not to disturb, for sentimental reasons. When he saw this metal fitting we were off into the CPC subject, he checked out my assurances by asking me to test the metal with a voltpen.
Went through the certificates asking me to explain a few things. Know your stuff and what each box means.
It is most important to know that he does not expect you to know everything, thats why they want you to have all the books with you. Do not ever bull****. Tell him your nervous. BUT MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHERE THE ANSWER IS IN THE BOOKS AND GO STRAIGHT TO IT !!.

preparation for that day was years in college and a good brush up in the MONTHS before.

Make sure your work is also neat and tidy and by that I mean no exposed metal in the CU so your earth sleeving will be touching the MET same goes for line and neutral.

Know your RCD trip times, bathroom zones and IP ratings, uses for 30mA RCDs and anything else that is relevant to the jobs you are showing him.

Test and inspect know it inside out and upside down plus your expected readings and what might be wrong if you dont get it. Ensure all bonding is suitable and in place.

Good luck

Chris

My area engineer basically just went through the schedule of inspections sheet and asked me for about all the different catagories.

He's also a stickler for anything "earthy" being bonded, and did pick up on a big old waste pipe that wasn't.
