There seems I have no earth connected to the consumer unit from the supply intake. The intake has the supply cable coming in and live and neutral going to the meter. The intake appears to have a connection slot for earth but nothing from there to the CU. This is a major major fault how do I get it fixed quickly? It must have been like this since work was done in 2004 for the previous owners. The supply company fitted a new meter about 4 years ago. Trying to post a picture but having problems. Seem to have added photo now

its possible that it may be earthed in the meter pan. or transformer but I would get your local spark to check it out

Contact your local DNO and ask if PME is available on your streets distribution system. If not then engage an electrician to provide you with a TT system (earth rod). Just make sure that the electrician knows what he's doing and doesn't start bashing in a 3/8'' short twigg that some here think constitutes an earth rod!!

Thanks for that. I will ring tomorrow. There is bonding to the earth in CU and gas and water pipes. It just seems very strange that there is no earth wire. We have had electric work done about 5 years ago and they never mentioned it.

is it an overhead supply?

I'd ask a local sparky to come and do a Ze - this should be a first step and may put you mind at ease.

I would do that free of charge if I was near enough!

it's a right mess anyway. paul m, glennspark and a few other sparks are in your area. both good lads. (cheques made out for cash, gents).

I'll have a look at it tomorrow late morning. I'm doing a repair job on an alarm in Cross Gates (North Leeds) and can come over and have a look and do a few tests free of charge. Tell you what needs doing, tell you how much and I'll have whats needed to to the job there and then if you want to go ahead, or give you time to think about. Not a big job BUT if you dont have an Earth!!! PM sent to the OP with my number. Lets have a look and take it from there.

Yes mate, quick visual (the photo does not give much info on the earthing side of things, only the cable's are a mess) quick Ze, install a rod if needed, simple test and cert (changing the characteristics of the installation) and job done. Even with materials I would only charge ÂŁ70-ÂŁ90. It is a big problem/fault, BUT not a big issue for an Electrician and not very expensive for what your getting in return.

Just looked at the blurred photo again and it looks like there was an earth clamp on the incoming sheath and now it has gone (after the last of of work carried, assume a Volex board change and/or rewire??). Opinions on that Gents?

The OP has got back to me via PM and his wife has got a friend in to look at this. Pity, I would have liked to take photos and show us all the real problems and photos of the end result. He still has my number.
