Hello, we are in the process of trying to sell our flat, the buyer has had an electrical survey and the report stated that having 2 sockets without switches was against regulations. Is this true and if not can someone please point me in the direction of the standard that proves it is not true.

Many thanks

Stephen

I am not often right, but I am wrong again.
Attached is part of a report on post war building studies for electrical installations giving their thoughts on sockets
They missed off the requirement that when placed on the floor it should really hurt when you stand on it.

I've often wondered, why they were so concerned about socket outlets in 1944. Trying to take their mind off things perhaps?
more like trying to justify their "reserved occupation" status. i.e. exempt from military service.

It is a fascinating booklet, The committee was formed 1942 to design wiring systems for the post war housing boom. Either very optimistic or they already knew what the outcome would be. A lot of the things they came up with are still in use today (consumer units, ring circuits, 13A sockets etc) but some never came to pass ( eg cable radio).
I am sure the booklet would be of interest to many on the forum but I don't know if it is posable to put it on the forum practically or copyright wise. Perhaps Dan can advise, it is just under 100 pages.

We were a proud "engineering leader" ,with plenty of experience of how it was done in other countries.
(that we had invaded !) Keen to keep voltages high for efficiency , but stay ahead of safety ...
(you could still gas your self with town gas from an oven)
We loved statistics /red tape even back then !

I have a book that I was given by my sister last week called 'the book of electrical installations' by Rankin and Kennedy, it is very early 1915 I believe so an amazing insight to early electrical installation and engineering!

R-fur, thanks for posting those extracts, they are very interesting. The use of "recapitulated" in point 6. was welcome, for a pedant like me, anyway!
On another point, the original thread related to unswitched sockets in a domestic setting, and purely by coincidence, I was on a train yesterday (a very rare occurrence) and noticed that the sockets provided for passengers to charge phones etc were metal-clad unswitched sockets. Is this simply for longevity and less maintenance?

It wasn't just socket outlets! The war effort had, as often happens, led to great advances in engineering and manufacturing economy and efficiency. Anticipating a major rebuilding programme not far hence, wouldn't you want to have all your ducks in a row to promote the use of more efficient and 'future-proof' methods to eke out what was left of resources to best effect? Or would you go back to the old methods that were now looking clunky and old-fashioned in the light of wartime developments?
