Hello all, screwfux are advertising their standard 25mm SWA glands as 'IP54'. They are just normal Tower 2 part glands and I can't see any sort of rubber ring in them. Is this rating correct? A thousand thank-yous!

The nails been hit squarely with the statement “correctly installed”. Cut the shroud back too far and bang goes you’re IP rating.

For goodness sake I’d rather cut a shroud so it’s a bit too tight. If needed take a sliver off to get it right. The shroud is the first thing to go on the cable so it’s no great shakes. One of the few instances of “cut twice, get it right”.
If any of you remember the old neoprene shrouds you couldn’t cut them, but they were a great seal on the cable. A nightmare to apply, they would rip open if you got it wrong.

And I will call the person a liar that says they haven’t made a cable off and then looked at the shroud sat on the floor!

Doing an11KV PILC joint I’d got the cores sweated together, the spreaders taped in, everything…………..

Except the lead sleeve!

It’s sat there at the side of the bloody trench. Had to cut the sleeve length ways and then plumb it around the joint. As far as I know it’s still in service 25 years later.

Everyone gets at plumbers, have a go at lead work. You may change you’re mind if ever you find an old school plumber to show you how to do it.

It was funny when they changed the gas meter at my first house. The old boy took one look at the outgoing lead pipe where it joined the copper and said “an electricians done that!”
