Good morning everyone. I bought some property in northern Michigan and this is on it. Not an electrician, just want to know what it is. I figured what better place to ask. Transformer? Access box? Portal for little green men? Consumers Energy is the provider. I called them, gave them the number on the box. They couldn't tell me what it is and it would be a few weeks before they could send someone out. Thanks in advance.

It's looks too small to contain a transformer, unless it's around the back of the cabinet out of ,that's probably on a pole somewhere nearby.
The box will just be local electrical service connector cabinet for the neighborhood properties.

snowhead: Thanks. That makes sense. The whole area is a mostly undeveloped neighborhood. Someone, way back when developing this area was the plan, put underground service in. There is not a pole anywhere. The few neighbors that do have houses, have nearby, shorter, more square boxes with rounded edges on top. I assume these are the transformers. Thanks again---Pete

Good thinking - the other side of that is my garage and also where the gas comes in so probably quite a tidy solution if it comes to it!
