I have had some re-wiring, new sockets etc done by a charming electrician. One of the things I had done was install a heated towel rail, Dimplex. I would upload a photo but I think I need to have posted 6 posts before that, however I will try and paint a picture instead.

Small bathroom. Lavatory in the corner at ankle level is the wiring for the towel rail with an on off switch. Is that safe, I thought in a bathroom it was a pull on/off?

im guessing that the main reason sockets have to be so far away fropm the bath, is to stop mrs jones prom using it to dry her hair, and then dropping the hair dryer in the bath.
Most appliances come with approx 1m of cable, and you would have to be really stuoid to use an extension lead, and if they did, then they would have done that from a different room anyway.

It's amazing how many sockets I come across just outside the bathroom door, literally 2 feet away from the bath inside. I often go to houses with no bathroom heating. When I ask them what they use in winter they show me how a fan heater reaches nicely and sits at the base of the bath :)

the stupidity of some people is astounding. The sister in law once stuck a knife into a toaster that was plugged in. Fortunately for her, she didnt depress the toast holder inside, but if she had.

I asked her if she wanted to leave her kids without a mother. I dont think she'll do it again.

We normally wire for a switched fused spur outside of the bathroom and then onto a flex outlet plate to supply an electric heated towel rail/radiator.

I think it's a case of common sense in most cases. Even if a SFCU was outside zones and therefore "allowed", if I thought that there was a likelihood that someone could splash water onto it, then I would probably do as you suggest, or maybe mount the switch higher up.

So no sockets in kitchens from now on then as the possibilty of splashing water onto them is possibly as high as in a Bathroom. Certainly no sockets within 3 meters of a sink. lol.
