I just passed 17th edition as most jobs I'm looking at require it, took me 5 weeks to do all courses, thing is the misses dad found out and asked me to have a butchers at his consumer unit because it was stinking, I had a look and the consumer unit and it was fine as I dutifully done all the testing, I then followed supply cable back and there is a supply isolator switch rated at 43A for the enclosure and 30A rewireable fuse and it's basically burnt through the Bakelite and the insulation of the cable, what may have caused it? The fuse hadn't blown and the MBC hadn't gone either, also shouldn't RCD protection switch to OFF when power goes off?

If this is in wrong place, sorry and could you redirect me pleeeease?

Are you sure it is not a supply to the cooker or shower ? As it sounds like a 30a radial feeding something like that. It would be dark brown or cream coloured one way cu by the sound of it. try and post a picture for us to see.

No, think he had a cowboy in to do it, swa comes in and goes to isolator, isolator is below the CU and goes straight into the feed could it just not be man enough? I could put pic up if I could work out how

It sounds like a loose cable is cooking up its terminal and will only get worse if left. Is this an out going circuit in addition to the consumer unit or is this between the meter and the main consumer unit ?

Between the meter and the consumer unit, but it's only got a 30A rewireable in it, and I kid you not he runs loads off it. I can't believe it all runs from one fuse, it's a double split board and runs three floors including plug in halogen heaters and 7 workstations

Quasi domesticate it's an office next to his house, cable size is 16mm swa in and 16mm T+E out. Comes from meter, through a isolator switch beside meter, underground in swa and pops up into another isolator (the burned out one) inside the office, from there it's a 3ft run into the consumer unit.

I get the idea, but still dont undertand the reason for the fusing. either way it still needs sorting or if its acting as a main switch all power will be lost shortly. As i understand it the EB meter feeds your main switch and its not a check meter on a private supply so you will have to contact them disconnect to enable it to be corrected. I can't say pull the service fuse as this is should not be done but on informing them of a dangerous situation they should turn up really quick. Not sure if its chargable though as on consumer side of meter. Still like to see a photo but dont think you have enough posts yet.

would it not be a solution of tests are correct to possibly just run new tails to cu 1 and then on a mcb feed to an additional new 17th edition c/u (if hes splitting it for E.G an out building or second board)

also what would be the effects if the polarity was wrong on point installed (the one installed a year ago)?

I couldn't put power back on, the fuse carrier was knackered, I isolated at first isolator and will replace like for like over the weekend as all tests seem good, just don't understand how it could have happened, thanks for your help tho fella

If you have a non personal email or something I can send pics of the installation, I'm not daft tho, it's just definitely a cowboy job, seals are broken and there is zero attempt made at a professional job. I'm pretty miffed that it's happened, As the missus works there too. Just want to make it safe for him before Monday, any advice is appreciated and if you say how to give the thank you things I'll send em, cheers
