Hi Folks,

Advice gratefully appreciated! Mrs T is having new induction hob (7KW) and a double oven (4.1) installed.

The existing electric hob and oven is supplied by a 10mm cable.

Is the 10mm existing cable sufficient for the new oven and hob? Assuming it is, how do I supply the two items from the one cable? At the moment the 10mm cable is terminated at a wall mounted cooker switch with a socket with a 45A mcb at the consumer unit.

Thanks again.................

More than than adequate mate!! lol!!

To be honest if the runs are less than 3 metres you could use 6mm/2,5mm cable. though personally I would go 6mm/4mm for it.

As you asking these questions i'm assume your not an electrician, do you feel competent enough to do this work?

Because have you an existing connection point, like the 1 I highlighted, if you have what size cable in in that 10mm as well. If you haven't got an existing point, or the cable needs to be changed from the switch to the point, then you may come under the Part P regulations.

Would you not feel better getting a sparks in, it's a very simple job, perhaps an hour, 2 at most and would not cost a fortune

TBH - well done for asking the questions, nowt numpty in that!!

FYI, 10mm T&E is good for 32 - 64 amps (7.5kw - 14.9kw) depending on how it's been installed. So by the time you allow for diversity (an electrical way of saying that not everything is ever on at the same time) then you can see why you are nicely in the clear, and well done to the previous installer for leaving you with a 10mm!

Thanks for getting back to me guys. Looks like having the 10mm cable already in will save me quite a bit cash.

As the double oven will be about 6m from where the 10mm cable currently terminates at the cooker switch, am I better using a 6mm cable?

Is there such thing as a cooker / hob switch or will I have to buy separate ones?

Well unfortunately because the units are 6m away as per the regulations you should not drop the size of the cables feeding them and so technically you should use 10mm for each appliance.

Though not a reg it is good practice not to have a single switch that controls 2 units more than 2 metres from either appliance.

The more your informing us the more I think you might need the help of a qualified electrician, bet your glad you have come on here now

Thanks M, thehobs, going in the same place as the original one, ie a meter from the cookerswitch. Its the double oven that’s 6m away.
Sooo...... fromthe original 10mm cable. I run a 10mmcable for approximately 6m to the double oven. And again, from theoriginal 10mm cable run a 6mm to the new hob.
Bobs your Uncle Fred!

Yes James, are you going to refer to the new part about branch circuits and sockets added to it in the amendment, I noticed that as well.

I also noticed that they have added a part to 434.2 saying you shouldn't do this if it is in a location that presents a fire risk, I suppose a kitchen could be classed as that.

It should open up a few areas for discussions.

This now makes a simple to interprate reg into a vague one with whats classed as a fire risk:confused:
