As the title says....

I'm working on a self-employed basis for a couple of approved electricians at the moment and wondered if it is possible to complete the NVQ in this situation. I have the pre-requisite 2330 L3, 17th & 2391.

Yes you can, I have just signed up to do the level 3 with delta electrical training. As you have 2330 l3 etc you can enrol straight onto the standard course.
Get on it before March 31st though as it finishes then and a new qualification takes over. With delta there are no site visits just an online portfolio you complete, you have to take lots of photo's, looks daunting at first but not too bad once you get into it. You have to be able though to show work on at leat least three cable types and three enclosures, ie PVC singles, FP200, T&E, cable tray, trunking, conduit plus some other criteria (nothing major), look it up on their website.
Three reasonable size jobs see you through (cannot pass within 12 weeks, city and guilds rule but you submit the assessments), if you enrol before march 31st you have til march 2014 to complete I think (dont quote me on that last bit though). Delta training are excellent, you get a personal assessor who can email/call for advice.

Ok, thanks Gaz. I'll be starting it at my local college in Sept' if possible. I thought it would have been much more in depth with site visits etc? Not very stringent is it? How much did your course cost? I think the one at college is around ÂŁ800 but I think the JIB can help with the fees if you have an ECS card.

Spoke to a college today regarding 2356 NVQ level 3. If your self employed and want to enroll on the course you'll need a company to 'sponsor' you. Basically they just need a company name other than your own to put on their paperwork.

With regards the rush to enroll on the 2356 NVQ before the end of march registration date, there's no need for the rush... You can enroll on the new 2357 NVQ ( which begins september ) with the same 2330 level 3 qualifications. The lecturer said there are a couple small changes to the course, and one larger change in that it will incorporate a unit on micro generation.

I spoke to somebody in the NICEIC training department few days ago, they told me that i could go out as a sole trader and do domestic electrical work with city and guilds level 2,and 3.I asked the question about part p they said i was more than qualified to do so,although i would still need to notify building control or council.Has anyone else been told this? If so get back to me. Wolfacer.

The changes are the AM2 and an environmental unit. Fairly big changes in my book

This is my forst post so please go easy on me.
I am currently doing an apprenticeship and am about to complete my 2330 level 2 and NVQ level 2, due to my employer being short of work I may be going self-employed soon so I can work for a few different approved electricians in order to get enough work, would i still be able to do my level 3 and NVQ 3 if I was self-employed.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

You can set out as you are with the quals you have. If you want to keep paying your LBC every time you do a notifiable job it's cool, but your best bet is to get yourself part p registered with one of the scheme providers. Will save you money in the long run and they will take over notifying LBC for you.
