Hi guys, was sent to a job today as someone was complaining their water heater didn't work, it was wired from a smart meter to a Lucy block- then there is 2 supplies- 1 going to main d/b & 1 gong to the heating d/b but the heating d/b only has storage heaters on it and a (weather switch???) the water heater switch in the kitchen only has a supply from the main d/b. the switch in the kitchen has a (off peak) timer and a boost button, would just like to verify a few points

1. Is off peak power kick in at night time ( as this decided by the power company)

2. The dial on the water heater switch is set from 1-24 and has to markers, summer and winter, do I just set it so that the winter marker is on the current time and the off peak will kick in itself at midnight etc......

3. Can a smart meter do the same job as 2 desperate peak/ off peak meters?

Thanks in advance :)

1. Yep, via timer or radio teleswitch

2. I'm guessing they have a timer there to switch the water heater on during off peak hours? Normally there will be two elements, top is a boost for the on peak and bottom is to heat the whole thing during off peak time. You might just need to set the time right, check it's working, test the element

3. Yes, modern meters have an internal timer as it were

Remember Lower thermostat heats bottom 1/3 of the tank only when ordered by off-peak meter or timer. Just read carefully the wire combination from here waterheatertimer.org

How is this possible? Surely the heat ries to the top of the cylinder and heats the entire water stored...........

Peak usually heats the top of the cylinder.
