On plain clay tiles it is always a good idea remove sections of tiles to give yourself a foothold.

On Saturday's job we didn't break a single tile - first time ever.

yep, we've done that to make a ladder up the roof on the battens, but if the felt is old it's so brittle you can easilly make a hole in it with your toes

This is true. Try to keep your feet on the rafters.
