olci electrical courses

hi, i am from oxford i have been looking for elctrical courses in the colleges around unfortunatly you have to be on the waiting lit at least 2 years,so i was thinking to do it with OLCI as i rang them up nd quoted me 5800 pounds city and guild 2330 level 1 and 2 NVQ level 3 + 17th edition +part p + something else all for free if i take the full pack,is it the reasonable price? and anyone has done these courses before? is it worth? please any advice would be appriciated and any other good company run the same courses is very welcome before i blow up 6 grand.thanks.

Have you tried ACCESS TRAINING in cardiff

I know a few guys who have been through there and they reckon its really good,they got a tutor named Shakey and he really knows his stuff,apparently

Don't bother, they only do Part P/EAL etc not the full 2330 according to their website

Just finished my 2nd week at Access in Cardiff and they do do the full course, booked in for week 3 on 23/11.

Give them a call.

Found them to be very good and very helpful.

I’m doing one of these packages with OLCI in Mansfield at the moment. Doing the practicals and exams for my 2330 Level 2 now, getting towards the end of it. Been happy with it so far, centre was brand new and the tutor there is a top bloke! The package Im doing you have to book each session separately which good really as Im still working in my old job to tide me over. Looking to get into domestic stuff though so want to get work as a mate to get some experience and practice for my NVQ. Never had any trouble booking the sessions, always seems to be space and managed to do some of them at weekends which was handy. The people I’ve spoken to on the phone before when booking them always look at what youve done so far and know what you need to do next, seem pretty efficient to me.

I think really it’s a case of getting out what you put in, I did plenty of work on the theory before I started the practical and its been fine. Had the theory tutor to help as well when I got stuck so if your doing an OLCI course make sure you use him, he knows what he’s doing. Seen some on here moan about the sales or whatever, but I had the guy round to my house to talk me though it. I’d already done a lot of research into what courses I needed to do so knew what I was getting. I got a couple of extras thrown in as well and it was all noted down so shouldn’t be a problem – always best to make sure you;ve got it in writing I guess.

Found the people on the course a good bunch as well, all friendly and we help each other out if needs be, but as I say the tutor there is top notch so he’ll always answer any questions and sort you out. I feel like I’m getting a good base form the course thatll help me out in the future, so all happy here.

The total cost for the nvq3 including vat is
£5858.85

The level 2 on its own is 13 days split into 5 sessions
The price for this course is ££2,752.24

The level 3 on its own is a 10 day course also split into 5 sessions
The price for this course is £2,706.40

The nvq3 on-site assessment
The price for this course is £500.21


What free things have they thrown in to get people onto the course? Have completed level 2, and want to know before signing up to level 3 what other people have got so I can use it as a bargaining tool - Not that I expect much luck.

hi all i am new to the web site but reading comments on training cousre providers and after some advice please.

i have been looking into retraining as electrican , i have been made redundant and got a young family so would like to invest in my future.

sent off to vavious training providers on the internet OLCI,train 4 trade skills.trade qualified, new carrer skills and RF training.

they all seam to offer the same sort of qualification packages.

went and seen OLCI last week they offered me the city and guilds level 2 + 3 2330 and NVQ 2356 level 3 also incuded was

part p and pat testing for
£ 5,858.58 also had to pay £40 per exam for add on courses .

the sales guys seemed ok but have read that some times they are a bit pushy which is not surprising when they are probably on comission.
the trainner seemed like a decent guy to get on with at wirral merseyside base

but i have read that the admin staff are really hard to get hold of and the course notes are full of mistakes . can anyone comment on these guys or other training providers.

i live in the north west and dont mind traveling to the right training provider to get the right qualification as i am investing in my future.

i know its alot of money so would like some advice before i go signing up any comments welcomed.

hi all. though id chip in with my 2 cents. read some bad stuff about train 4 skills on consumar forum and and after meeting with them wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole. looked into new career skills as well but they dodnt seem to have a centre anywhere in the north, just a little office so wasn’t convinced by them either! not heard of the other two, so maybe they weren’t around when i started looking – lot of new companies seem to start up like that and then disappear, normally with your money! anyway, after all that i went to see ocli in machester, then the bloke came to my house, told me what i needed to know, was straight with me about the whole thing. that was a coupleof years back, in the end i decided not to do it cos i couldn’t afford it. mates there seem to be ok though. another thing, some of these places dont get you the proper certificates, so make sure to check before you sign on the dotted line. cheers.

Well i'm doing my training through olci. I've completed my level 2 and on with my level 3 now and have been to both the Newcastle and Leeds centres for my practical workshops.

In my experience the facilities are good and the tutors i've had have been great!

A lot of people think that they sign up to these courses and they are going to be taught the courses.....YOU AREN'T!

OLCI = Open Learning in the Construction Indudtry!!

Open Learning means you have to put the theory work in at home then your expected to have done this when you go for your practicals.....if not, you'll flunk and then blame OLCi for your own laziness!

Girhal – I did a couple of short courses with OLCI at the Merseyside training centre, 17 edition and pat testing. Centre was all very new, think it had opened quite recently, all new equipment, plenty of tools etc. Got a friendly service on the admin side of things as well, but all went smoothly so didn’t need to contact them much. Good value for what I got so id definitely go back there again.

I thought long and hard before I spent my cash, and OLCI did not inspire me. Just don't rush into anything keep checking forums and getting opinions, pop down there etc.

I went for Able Skills in the end and all though not perfect they I made a good choice as I don't think a perfect training centre exists.

Did a course with OLCI, similar to that steve but without those extras, same price. Did mine in Bristol and never any problems at all. Theory course was fine, still use it now from time to time, tutor for my course was great, and centre was definitely up to scratch. Didn’t look anywhere before I started to be honest – just went to the olci centre and liked what I saw, so cant say much about the other ones you listed. Sounds like your in a difficult situation but you can get the course done quite quick if you your mind to it so you should be out of work for too long. I worked on the side between classes to keep me ticking over, but once id finished the course they were quite in good helping me to find work, contacts, advice etc. can obnly comment on olci as I say, but I was more than happy.
