OLCI Livingstone, Scotland...is it any good??

Hi there,

I am, like many people, looking to change career paths and make a living as an electrician.
I have read countless extremely helpful threads about these fast track courses. General concensus looks slightly against them, however a few have been in favour and being a positive individual I am going to go for it (you have to start somewhere and the mortgage, wife and kid need pennies)

My only concern is the that the facilities at my local OLCI (livingstone) are not upto scratch as a few of them in England seem to be.

Is there anyone out there who has been and done a course there?

your input would be greatly appreciated before i depart with my cash.
I am looking to do the EAL inc part P, 2382-10, 2392-10, 2377 and pv course. I realise that this is where potentially the small fish swim but i have intentions of progressing to the bigger oceans when i can.

Can't comment on OLCI but although the part p bit doesn't apply in Scotland, i've just read their course description of the domestic installer course which states the following,

This course is ideal for you if you want to work as an electrician in domestic environments only.
You can complete and self-certify domestic work in domestic environments eg. bathrooms and kitchens, lighting circuits and wall sockets in people’s homes. You can also inspect, test and complete the necessary paperwork for a new single phase installation. In addition, you will also be able to select, install and commission environmentally friendly Solar PV systems, which convert sunlight into electricity.

What are they talking about. Nowhere does it say about registering with a scheme of any sort.

Am I missing something here, or are these guy talking through their rear ends

........yea, this is something which is confusing me slightly, because they dont mention any of the Self Certification schemes, I wont be able to self certify.

How long does it take to typically become certified by one of the schemes, assuming that this doesnt happen on the course.

It depends on how quick you can get the jobs done for inspection, the time it takes for them to process your application etc etc.

Think it was about a 6 week wait when I applied to Elecsa.

If you're in Scotland though, Part P rubbish doesn't apply

right ....ok, they (OLCI) certainly didnt mention that about Part P not recognised in Scotland. Just off the phone to them and the advisor said if you are in Edinburgh or Glasgow it MIGHT be recognised.....mmmmmmm

Sorry to be so nieve, but if i do do the course, and yes the Part P section would be a waste of time, just a nice to have..would I still be able to get registered with SELECT or ELECSA etc, ie is there an equivalent to Part P in Scotland which this course is missing? I am interested in doing 2391 also, is this essential initially to start working as self employed.

Any compentent persons scheme needs you to show just that, competance.

Don't know if certain quals are required, other than wiring regs.

Your best bet would be to phone up who ever you wish to join and get it from the horses mouth.

Any training provider want your money first, then the training comes next.

Im getting to the last few assessments for my qualified electrics 2330 l3 at the Livingston centre done everything from a beginner to now with olci. Had no problems wih the centre, ben on site as an electrician’s mate for the last couple of months and everything ive been taught has been spot on. Jboy1888 – not sure who National training services are, all my sessions have been at the olci centre. I looked into a lot of training companys before I signed up with olci and everyone was charging about the same for what I wanted. Unless I went to college but im not getting any younger so no time for that!

Glad you course is going well. Are you looking to work in Scotland? I have just been on the phone to SELECT to try and clear my mind about being recognised by SJIB.
As i now know, Part P is not recognised in Scotland and the only way to be able to sign off your work as a self employed electrician is by SELECT/SJIB and the only way they will do that is that if you undertake an Apprentice or Adult Training scheme, which is a long road, time i dont have to be honest. They recommended I put my CV out to fellow SELECT members and try and become a mate....
Once again I am not sure!! all very confusing.
What are your thoughts.............anyone!?!

did my wiring regs update at one of there centres, good enough place and not bad value. you do the theory at home first then assessment at the centre. also been to ocli in newcastle, not much difference between the two.

They provide a domestic installer package or full spark training. Its up to the individual to register with a scheme afterwards. If you succeed.

The lads providing thr training were very good although knew nowt about sales and prices etc...

Nevertheless, when I did a course a while ago, not Scotland, all the lads on the course were under the impression that scheme registration was included in the price they had paid!

Bloke I work with was trained at olci in Livingston, think he finished last year. Seems to know what he’s doing and hes not had a bad word to say about it. He put someone else onto them as well for that domestuic package – think the guy wanted to do up properties or something. Not sure about competent schemes up in Scotland so cant say much about that.
