My friend recently asked me to install a supply for an electric shower I've looked at his consumer unit and its one of the old ones with rewireable fuses... Is it okay to run the supply from here or would i have to upgrade the consumer unit to a new one. Cheers

No you don't need to upgrade the fuseboard, you do however need to provide Rcd protection for the new circuit.

This is the main problem today Tel!
People automatically think rip out a perfectly good board, just because it is easier.

these 3036 boards come in handy for garage/shed jobs. you know the ones. 2.5 T/E fed from RCD in house, shed lamp blows.. whole house blacked out.

I feel that if you don't know the answer to this one then you are not qualified to do the work and should tell you friend the to get an electrician.

What often gets missed is the rating of the main switch on the old Wylex boards, 60A on smaller ones. Do as Telectrix says or fit new Dual RCD CU and make whole install better.

Think you may have misread Telectrix post mate. Post 4 says "split tails. fit a 1 way sub with RCD and MCB for shower" Doesn't mention replacing old CU and as Dan86 says "The guy has been asked to install a supply for a shower. not rip him off"

Care to tell me how many Wylex main switches you’ve come across that have failed? PS,it's the same switch throughout the range.

MM's stock answer. Fleece the customer for every penny you can get.

Tell’s solution would seem the best, with a couple of spare ways any future alterations can be accommodated.

After reading you post again, I owe you an apology. I read your post as "Do as Telectrix says AND fit new Dual RCD CU.."
I still thing replacing the original CU to add a shower circuit is just not necessary...

Yes that does appear to be the case. I may get an electrician to fit the correct glands. Thank you.
