Old Sparkie

Having lived in Australia for the last 28 years I want to know if my old City & Guilds "B" & "C" certificates are still considered as current qualifications, and will I be allowed in the UK to work,
or do I have to take some other refresher courses to start up an electrical business?

nothing to stop you starting up on your own. for domestic work , joining napit or elecsa is advisable. 17th ed. and 2391-10 qualifications would be advantageous.

LOL. you need the 17th, or BS7671 as it is now called and the on site guide.don't rush out and buy yet, though. new one due out in july.

Thanks for the info, I had a quick look at Google to find out quite what 2391-10 meant, I gather from a brief look it basically means accredition testing.
I used to be a London Based JIB Technician, as a supervisor I worked mainly in the construction industry doing temporary installations on sites along with erecting tower cranes and hoists with commisioning & their certification.

Thanks again for the info

And prepare yourself for the bureaucratic madness. Endless amounts of rules, regulation, procedures, strategies. Electricity is now more complicated then god and the creation of the universe.

I really don't know who invented this mountain of payperwork, or the people that make a living out of it, but it is very much the same here in Aus.
Every job that you do has to have a $20 Certificate of Electrical Safety (Chargable to the client) that must be recorded on your invoice, lodged with the Instector of Electrical Safety Department that can and will be eventually be audited.

Ah! well it gives some poor soul a job....

Are you looking to come back, you are going to have such a shock, not sure if you have visited over the years, but things aint the same, trust me, if you like a drink in a local pub you aint going to find one, turned them in to flats, and as for schools loads have been sold of and also turned in to flats, its utter madness.

Yeah agree with Bradzz ! Also be aware window cleaners can and most of whom i know DO earn a whole lot more money than you ever will....In fact its almost soul
destroying to know how much they can earn in a week..BTW i not knocking window cleaners in any shape or form. Or any cleaners come to mention it..

I hear that there are countries much more appreciative of electricians and where pay scales still reflect that attitude

They also do not have an enormous pool of labour seeking the very small vacancies available and where you are trained in a skill and dont have to continually pay to demonstrate that skill

A word of caution
I'm sure Australia would have more in common with those other countries than the occupational cespit that many sparks here reside

If you was a tech before, then you will have grandad rights, as they cannot take away a grade that you previously had.

The lack of years not being in JIB might cause a problem though.

Just apply and see shat they say, and keep us posted

Unless your coming back for unavoidable reasons STAY WHERE YOU ARE.
Life over here is not good and the economy is getting worse not better, after over 20yrs in business one way or another I've never known it this bad. Many business people I speak to think its going to be least 5 yrs before any sign of a proper recovery. Remember folks the banking system collapsed completly, we gave them taxpayers money and they are very reluctant to use it for supporting a recovery. Instead they use it for their own ends letting the average Joe suffer.
Project Merlin, wot a load of bull$hit. More like project get me out the $hit and sfuff you.
Anyhow John , do you get the drift.
Chin up!!!!
