had the worst call out ever this morning, client called to say can i come round to quote for a rewire,

always suspect when i am called to one of these

got there to find no lighting, on poking around found a 32 off in the wylex mini mcb plug in type cu, cant be that in fact nothing below 16 in the whole board.

on further talking to the customer found that they had had on of those builders

in short the upstairs 1mm was on a 16 amp
the downstairs 1mm was on a 32, the reason they did that, simple, they connected the laundry room sockets and 2 sets of ufh onto the exisiting lighting circuit, has been running for the last 5 years like that!!!!

spent hours on site, felt like i should call the police, things like 2.5 under the carpet in the hallway with cores exposed from the foot traffic 3 2.5 mm cables placed together and tape joined, like you would with speaker cables.

my apprentice learnt a new phrase today, energise with caution, even though you have tested you are still unsure when things are that bad.

to make it worse the property had a PIR carried out a few years ago and passed.

got a parking ticket but actually do not care about that, think i might actually go and find this builder and prevent him from carrying out any more of these installations.

Sounds like one I had recently. The "builder" had put a new non RCD protected CU in and new cables up to the attic from the CU then junction boxed onto the existing rubber cable. Their daughter got a belt off the shower which made them make the call. I asked them for the builders number but they didn't have it??!!??

i have a slightly different approach than most to work, i will not do it unless it needs doing so i tend to talk the old ladies out of a rewire when southern electrical contracting have carried out their free survey and scared them half a step closer to death with, so when i went to the house this morning i was in a different frame of mind, but the longer i was at site the more i concured that it will need rewiring,
if there are any competent electriciana out there who are attached to builders please let me know as i havent seen a decent one yet, but maybe thats because i only go out to faults.

I went to a house years ago and there was t+e under the carpet, somebody had used a router to dig a channel into the floors, then it was up the walls in plastic mini trunking.....people walking on the floor and the lights were going on and off, dog got a hold of t+e from mini trunking and went along the floor dragging its @rse backwards at speed....yeeouiii...budum budum budum budum...clatter...howl....

there's all sorts out there....then you get reeled in and trapped with it...
