Have an on going problem with a storage heater (Dimplex CXL24N). I've been out to look at it 3 times now and the occupier says that it still isn't working properly.
I was originally called out to it because it didn't work. The thermal reset had gone (not uncommon) and the thermostat did not look in good shape, So I ordered a new one and fitted it (2nd visit). During this call I had all the elements out to take a look and test resistance and IR. They all had similar resistance accross the elements.
Then I got called back becasue the heater wasn't getting hot enough and on attending I agreed and would have expected it to be a bit hotter than it was. So I wondered if one of the elements had gone. However on feeling the front of the heater It didn't feel like one area was cooler than the rest. Also, the resistance accross the whole heater was 17.8 ohms which I figure to be about right. 240/17.8 = 13.48Amps, 240 x 13.48 = 3.2KW. So, for a 3.4KW heater that seems about right...??
Anyway had another call today to say that it still isn't right and I don't really know where to go next. I'm doing this for a landlord, in one of his rentals. So far I've attended 3 times and paid for a new stat but can't really charge him if I haven't fixed anything. Here is a list of what I have checked, have I missed anything?:
1) Stat - replaced with a new one
2) thermal cutout - reset
3) Elements - removed, examined for damage, continuity and IR tests satifactory
4) Isolator wall switch - Replaced as I did find a high resistance accross the neutral terminals
5) Checked continuity of supply cables from consumer unit - checked out fine
6) Got rid of all the dust inside the heater
7) Asked if they dry clothes on the heater - Occupier says no, but sometimes puts their socks on the back, not covering the air vent (I'm a bit suspicious of this but it doesn't explain what's going on).
8) Is it the time clock - the clock is inaccessible. However there is another heater in the flat which is working fine.
9) Checked resistance accross the whole heater from the isolator switch (in the off position) got a reading of 17.8 ohms
10) Fuse protecting the circuit checked out fine
11) Continuity from the busbar to the outgoing terminals on the fuse holder tested fine.
Basically, I'm stumped. any ideas?
