I’ve been doing a bit of work for a customer in a house he just bought.... changing fittings, switches, that kind of thing... will lead to more I’m sure.
When I was there I saw his 75” tv sitting.

“you want me to put in a socket and whatever for that?”

“no... it’s all right. I’ve got the tv man coming for that”

Back today to change outside light fittings, and saw this:

Just a brush plate screwed to the wall... possibly not even on the wood. Hmmm, how’s he getting power?

That is the tv’s power cable just disappearing into the wall, and comes out the brushplate above.
I didn’t think the power cable was that long.... he wouldn’t have jointed it in the wall, would he???

oh, and the polyfilla in the corner I suspect is the satellite cable route from outside.

You can get those cords up to 5m long and that probably isn't the cord it came with that would have been black.

you're right, westy.... it must be a replacement, i can see the black cord on the first photo.

Still rough, pushing it through the wall like that.

Lets hope he finds the joists to screw the bracket to. Would be a shame for that to drop off the wall

Looking at the size of the hole below the socket I do wonder if that power cable is jointed in the wall as I doubt any of the plugs would fit through it

It's probably went between the socket front plate and back box.

Its 2021 .TV's dont go 9 feet high above fireplaces anymore !! Its all on a nice piece of furniture /stand etc

Pointless having strain relief on that flex, when it's bent through 110°.

I'd be pretty disappointed paying someone to install a TV and the job being finished like that.

obviously mr tv engineer isnt an electrician, so hes limited to plugging things into the socket.... (or he would have simply dropped a 2.5 down inside the wall and fitted a socket as a spur)

I admit i did the same in my own house... brush plate behind the tv, but also a brushplate low level so the cables dont just go through a hole in the plasterboard

Shhhh, don’t go telling people that there are sparks out there that do anything better than leave a bunch of cables tangled up behind there tv.

my wife will expect me to tidy them up if she hears about it.

With my AV installer's hat on, I can assure you that the correct method is to run in a bunch of random stuff and hide it inside the wall with a few token cables protruding through the brush plate. If you pull on those cables you will get, one by one, 3 HDMIs (one with a bent plug), a SCART cable with the metal collar missing off the plug, four pairs of phono leads, six Cat5e's of which one terminated in an RJ45 and two terminated in chock block, three speaker cables, 5 SDI BNCs and a 12-pair EBU 110 ohm digital audio multi, all taped into a snake with red PVC.

But no aerial and no mains. If you shine a torch through you can see a multiswitch with a dozen coax cables in it and its power light glowing. All attempts to aim a length of coax with an F connector on the end into the multiswitch will fail.

When you look at the varying standards of workmanship that tradesmen deem acceptable the expectation of customers seems just as varied as to what they will accept as a good job
As electricians I doubt any of us would think a flex hanging out of a wall with a plug top on would be an acceptable method of getting power to a TV but how does the TV man convince the customer that is the right way to do it leaving a mouse hole under the socket

Common bodgery by TV installers. I've found figure 8 leads jointed with choc blocks and just stuffed in the wall more than once.
