Just been to a job where a national firm had quoted £15,500 for 2.2kwp of Sharp panels. I couldn't quite believe it!

No, not Tesco - I think they were calle something like The Green Conservation group. They have a concession at our local posh garden centre. Price dropped from £15,500 for 2.2kwp to £13,900 ish when they were advised of the British Gas quote they had. With the customer's permission I'll be reporting them to REAL - some of the claims were truly outrageous as well as the price. No electricity going back into the grid, changes to the FiT imminent, get your immersion heater working again and use it for your hot water (remember it's only a 2.2kwp system) I just feel sorry for the punters who don't have the bull**** detectors in place.

Its going o be the same all over Consumers trust BIG firms and their advertising
Im noticing more n more "free Electricity" " government pay you " adverts on vans ect DSriving along at 50mph how are costomers going to read small print its the 2ft high "FREE" they see Baffled by B.S. Sales people
Wifes uncle (7x yr old) keeps asking me when im going to get into "this wonderfull solar thingy n make loads of money cos everyone wants it " I have to explain that if he gets it he would probably be in a nice warm nursing home or pushing daisies up and have 2 family mambers helping him by the time the installation was payed off along with the fact that the probability of power quoted and actual power from the units may be "Exagerated" other thing he goes on at me about it ruddy wind turbiness FFS this is the kind f people these big firms prey on as they see it as a way of keeping costs down and generaly have no morgage n a few quid in the bank

There's no law against overcharging - it's been around since people started selling things and always will be. That's why the phrase "buyer beware" was invented. If they want to charge extortionate amounts and people are prepared to pay, that's life. They'll either make lots of money from people who can't be bothered to get comparative quotes, or they'll go out of business because they're always being undercut.

Also, remember that the price charged represents all their costs as well as a profit margin. They might have big premises and expensive bank loans and major advertising budgets to fund - could be they're just bad at business.

They also buy cheaper than we do which ofsets some of their more expensive overheads - it's all swings and roundabouts, and how does buyer beware cover the moral issue of over selling to people who don't have the nouse to work out whether it's a good deal or not. If we all took your view I guess if you're a bit vulnerable it's tough! Sorry but that's not a World I want to live in.

Have you ever compared the prices between a supermarket and a corner shop? IS the corner shop "overselling" to people who haven't the nouse? Lots of things in the world aren't fair or nice.

PJ

It doesn't mean you should stand by and watch it happen. We'd still be doffing our cap to the Lord of the Manor if everyone took your stand.

Report them. People like this are a blight on our industry

Why bother !
I bet their paperworks in order so thats the important part covered , it would just be a minor offence if they are only lying and totally screwing everyone in the process !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, I don't see the connection between social inequality and rip-off pricing. Just as a matter of interest, did anyone pay the outrageous price you quoted at the start of this? The best way to beat them is to undercut them, or do you have more radical action in mind?

PJ

Witout wanting to go off topic and political, how exactly does undercutting help those who have been ripped off? Considering the main market of pv customers contains a group of potentially vulnerable people who are quite likely to trust big companies I think we should do more than simply "let the market decide". A rapidly growing industry with lots of money involved aimed quite often at older people with savings needs, in my opinion, to have a few barriers aginst the type of parasite that would be naturally attracted to it. This is being done to some extent, albeit in a fairly mixed up fashion. Some of the regulations in this industry have made my head hurt but I wouldnt want to get rid of them and simply hope that the good companies will undercut and out perform the bad and overcharging ones, because they won't. Lot of people who have a salesmen in their house for hours offering discounts on infated prices will sign up- is it just tough luck for those people?

Hmmn there are ethical contractors and unethical contractors. I'm pleased to be one of the former but disheartened to see some of the latter posting on the forum. It's a bit like turning the other cheek when someone is nicking grannies silver - should I go to the police - naw why bother, so long as it's not affecting me why should I worry .....

Or simply dont nick their silver and hope that this puts the buggers out of business.
