Hi guys,

ive been asked to instal an outside light to stop foxes gettin into the chicken coup.
what sort of light would work best to keep away foxes at night? I've been looking at most motion sensor lights but im not sure if they are applicable to foxes
Can anyone please clarify or point me in the right direction?

cheers
nick

You have a tough one there. A Fox will soon get used to a light ; we have them here from the woods in broad daylight, loud noises kept them at bay for awhile (radio timed) but they still got a few chickens.

Bury the chicken netting so they cant get under it , and secure the pen gates well ; because they are smart little fellows.

Continual harassment is about the only thing that miffs them . But they will return.

Don't know much about foxes but I saw a 2kW strobe light that someone once installed to deter porcupines. He swore it worked but I can't vouch for it, I was worried it might give them epilepsy attacks.

We get a few in the suburbs, kinda like an oversized, 20-30 kilogram, krimpvark (hedge hog) just a lot more destructive. Never got too close to one for obvious reasons but they must have teeth cause they make quick work of SWA cables and plastic HDPE water pipework.

If he cant get a real dog to do the job get an electronic type

sounds like a good idea in theory but i gotta think about the neighbours. Seeing as how foxes are nocturnal. I cant really have the neighbours bein woken up at 3am..

damn good idea though... hmmm

Nick, have a read of this you are up against a cunning creature.Foxes and Chickens | Down the Lane

A quote from the link on deterents
Hang human hair around the pen at six feet intervals. They don't like the smell apparently. Use ladies tight's or fine netting.

If the tights my Mrs had worn for the last few days was hung there
You wouldn't get me near the chickens, never mind the fox
I would also doubt the chickens having an appetite either
