Outside lighting

Currently doing some work in an commercial unit. Customer wants basic 400w halogen floods to illuminate car park and sign etc. I'm not too keen due to the frequency I'll be back changing lamps. What would you guys recommend that would give a similar light output.

As long as you inform them that lamp changing will incur a call-out fee (as lamps are consumables and therefore not guaranteed) then it should be a nice ongoing business for you.

metal halide. cost a bit more but more light, less lamp failure.

Want to be able to give the client a few options, if they still want to go with halogen then fine. Had thought about metal halide, what wattage would I need?

i replaced 8 500watt halogens with 4 150watt M/H and the client said there was a lot more light (and a hell of a reduction in running costs)

LED floods, you wont be replacing them for 5 years and they wont cost a lot to run

Don't think it'll be too long before these high wattage halogen lamps will be obsolete. So apart from the fairly frequent lamp changes that is bound to occur, he may not be able to purchase these 1000W lamps for too long!! MH is a far better alternative, better all round in fact!!

75W or 150W Quartz Metal Halide or High Pressure Sodium. Choose Metal Halide if colour rendition is important, Sodium is generally cheaper to maintain. Widely available in IP65 floodlight fittings. If you are going to be responsible for their maintenance over the long term, Thorn Areaflood Size 1 would be a good choice as all parts are available as spares.

Money no object LED floods might come down in price in a few years DONT buy cheap ones tho
IMO 150 or 70 halides depending on the area to be lit I try n steer company clients away from halogen due to frequent lamp changes reliability ect recently we fitted 6 no 2X28w floory floods crackin light from them and not that expensive

150 Metal Halides for me too, used four to light up an equestrian outdoor menage, work very well,and relatively cheap to run. The light is clean too whereas sodium looks a bit glum in my opinion.

Sodium are on the way out I recon as halides are so much more crisp and clean

High pressure sodium. Very power efficient and long lasting. Disadvantage is the orange colour not as appealing as whiter bulbs, but who cares in a car park!!

If you want to see orange then just fit a low pressure sodium... HP are like daylight in comparison.
