Not a 100% sure you are talking about the 'thin' steel capping, but if you are it is not deemed safe with or without earthing as a protective covering.

The only protective covering (metal) would be conduit..earthed

Ugly as it, cant you take your feed in the ceiling void, drill out externally, IP box where it exits or elbow plastic conduit out the premises, plastic conduit down to switch area or SWA, with the IP box on the outside doing the switching and the light switch on the internal wall?

As others have put it, ugly on the inside ro ugly on the outside...on the bright side the customer can chose :D
