Hello People

A friend of a friend has asked me to put a 150W PIR security light at the back of their house as they believe someone is coming into their garden at night. I said no problem and would just tap into the lighting circuit under the floor boards but they don't want any of the house disturbing, no carpets to be lifted, etc.
Only way I can see to do this is to plug the light into a socket, 3amp fuse in plug and use an RCD plug adaptor. There is a plug socket in one of the bedrooms that they do not use and is on the back wall of the house so I can drill out next to that.

Does the above sound ok or does any body have any other solutions??

Your thoughts are much appreciated.

It doesn't, but he states that he was going to use one of those ugly plug in rcd's, he was just being offered a better solution. There is nothing wrong with fitting a RCD even if it doesnt need it.

Hi Mate
Just done a job like this. We spurred off a Socket in bedroom to an FCU. Derated fuse in FCU to Ib of light fitting. Didn't put an RCD on it, as lights were RCD Protected at board, but I assume you could if you wished fit an RCD FCU? T&E into Spur & Arctic Flex out to fitting...

Not got Regs to hand. College tonight, so I'll flick for requirements even for myself...

Anything i put outside is rcd protected just to add some extra protection, also cables to lights are generally not mechanically protected and prone to damage thats the only reason and also in the OP he said about a plug in rcd and they look ugly and a bit of a bodge for a fixed light, rcd fused spur much better.Of course if the circuit is already rcd protected at the board just a normal fused spur will do

Can see no reason to RCD myself as i'ts fixed equipment, certainly not required in the regs.I'd just go straight out the back of a standard FCU. But if you feel the added protection of an RCD is a good idea no harm either.

just done this yeaterday i put the light on a 13 amp plug top with a 5 amp fuse no rcd protection as it is fixed equipment only put on plug top to save time as it was 8pm at night would have put on a spur but what the hell my tea was going cold and the dog would have eat it
