I was recently asked to go and quote for a full rewire of a 3 bed house in my local area (Bristol). I went there today to have a look and the customer said they had already had one quote but were worried that it was a little bit steep. Around these part a basic rewire of a 3 bed is being done for around £3500............ well the quote they had which was for a standard rewire (white plastic accessories) in a empty house was £9500! This was following a PIR the same company had done which stated "Needs rewire as does not comply with BS7671",the house is 35 years old of course it doesn't comply with current standards, it was not even an that bad condition, defiantly does not NEED a rewire although defiantly recommended if they want a fully up to date standard of property.

The bottom line is that this company produced a PIR showing the property to be unsafe and then massively over priced the work required, no wonder the general public think we are all trying to rip them off!

Makes me sick.

nothing wrong in saying heres my quote and it will be upto full standards.. you want the work or not.. so what your saying is rubbish.

you dont have to be just good at electrical installations anymore you need to sell yourself.. so take back that would be just as bad as the scammers..

I like to think my reputation and good work keeps me in business, not charming and scamming people like a salesman.

I believe part of the job is about selling yourself... as well as promoting the quality of your work that you provide at good value for money. Ripping people off just scares ALL clients into not wanting to part with their cash which is the last thing any of us need right now.

Just quote it, then do it. If you don't someone else will, now they have the seed of doubt in their mind that they need a rewire I bet they get it done. It may as well be you. I bet the other salesman will be back round there with his foot in the door pushing them to have it done.

I disagree, if the property does not need to be rewired it's far better to advise the client of this and spell out the reasons why, while saying if it needed to be done the result of this test would be xxxxx. Then tell them if they want to be bang up to date they need to do A, B or C.
This way the client knows that the contractor is honest and WILL pick the phone up when they do need work and proves that we're not all out to rip clients off to line our own pockets

Totally agree. Any rip-off quote should be ripped up. The problem is a lot of them aren't. On the other hand they could be used as good evidence.

This is pretty much how the meeting went, the clients have decided they want an up to date installation...... I shall be giving them a quote tomorrow.

At least you'll be able to sleep without a disgusting rip off on your conscience mate. I don't know how some can, knowing full well that they have scammed a customer. £9500 for a basic rewire, I always thought robbery was a crime:)
Another spin off is that it's you that'll be getting the recommends from them.
