I bet they are not "all" a.c.!...

The overhanging platform has the MG set on it. Ward Leonard main hoist. 250HP DOL main motor.
There was another 200HP of ancilery AC drives.

The down shop conductors were fed from an 800A 433V ACB

Tony we only have small 15 t cranes I'm
Not wanting to be able work on massive cranes.. Im on maintenance in a factory not to be a full time crane engineer... Just the company is thinking of us doing in house repairs.. Theyre all AC.. So totally different tony

The principal is the same, whatever the size. You need to fully understand the consequences of anything you do.

15Te doesn’t hurt any more than 300Te!

These are what I learnt Ward Leonard on

Is your company prepared to cover the training costs, preferably with the gantry crane manufactures of the equipment installed at your place of work?? Even with good training, don't expect to jump straight in to fault finding these units with both feet!! They will all have different characteristics/nuances that need to be got to known, even if they are all identical units!! And why it was and still is, always better to have an in-house maintenance team that get to know the machines and equipment inside out and backwards!! lol!!

If you get to work on other makes of crane you will come across different and sometimes difficult control systems, many of them DC.

Bear in mind what I said about safety. Not yours, but that of others and you’re responsibility to them.

PS have fun with rope changes. Some of ours were over 800' long.

I've been called to one of our sites before to change a rope of similar length probably longer. Well the actual job was a fault but of course me being Maintenance inclined me to help the other Maintenance fellas change it, got me extra pay anyway so :). Not guna lie it was hard work though

yes been told by a mate of mine, a lot are especially the big stuff due to better speed control isnt it and dc more smoother?

they are bridge rectifiers in your picture arent they?

That is just the negative rail, the positive rail is in the next cubical. It’s from the1960’s if I remember right. All sorts of fun things in the system as the cranes used regenerative braking.

Demag’s use a form of “hunting tooth” limits, I used to hate setting them up. If you get an experienced team of fitters on a rope change the limits will not require resetting.

These used four ropes on two hoist drums. Just to add to the fun the cab travelled with the cross travel crab. I nearly forgot and was about to walk out of the cab in to fresh air. (Watch the first step it’s a bit steep!) The pads lifted the load by vacuum, up to 8.5 tonnes.

I was supposed to be just electrical. Well that was the idea I set out with, didn’t exactly end up that way!

With staff cuts we took on more trades on shift work. Never did work out just how I got lumbered with being production manager, it just happened?

I moved to one company as shift electrician, the first week I’d welded up a shaft, turned it back to size and recut the keyway. Where’s the wires? The plant was one of the first in the country to be fully PLC controlled, I drifted off yet again in to programming.

Could someone please remind me what an electrician is supposed to do? I seem to have forgotten.

Programming and ladder diagrams aren't all that bad as long as its not your life to build them up. I've seen a ladder diagram print of that folded out so much that I just gave up looking for what I needed to find lol

I’ve tried using a print out once to fault find, it resulted in lengthy down time. One very unhappy production manager was sent packing by a furious Tony.

The arse kicking party afterwards had me as the guest of honour. The result was inevitable, two directors and three production managers quivering in the corner when I exploded.

The best bit, I was new to the company, an unknown quantity. I made my mark that day!

Each of the main PLC’s had a dedicated PC linked to it after that. Tony got the laptop he wanted.

Funny old world?

It's also how I found myself in R&D.
