Here's a beauty! I overheard this in a store that sells electrical materials as well as lots of other things (not b&q!!)
Customer to assistant:"Don't I have to notify the council when I do wiring to make sure I've complied with the regulations or something"?
Assistant:"Oh no, that only applies to proffesional electricians, if you are a diy person you can do what you want, otherwise we wouldn't be allowed to sell the wiring materials".
Good stuff eh?

When I say "fairly" competent, I mean that at one extreme I would not dream of trying to wire up a CU, but at the other, I am confident that you would not be able to tell that my spur was done by an amateur.

When I replaced a faulty ceiling fan, I photographed the wiring and was able to wire the new fan the same way. If I had not seen how it was done, I would have paid a professional to do it for me. I don't understand many of the acronyms and jargon that you use to make yourselves seem more clever than the rest of us, but I do know my limitations.

When B&Q label 2.5mm T&E as suitable for electric sockets, they are stating what is correct for most domestic installations. All my sockets are certainly wired with that and it was professionally done. I have been doing it myself for over 50 years without serious problems. Part of that is, as I say, knowing my limitations.

The reason I joined this forum was because a kitchen fitter was going to wire up a new cooker. I wanted to be reassured that it was done correctly and I wanted to do the cable routing myself to be sure.

...and you signed off the 'design' section on a completion certificate instead of the kitchen fitter, I take it.....no acronyms or jargon, just plain English.

acronyms and jargon are used by all trades, professions and organisations. i don't accuse the DWP of trying to appear more clever because they refer to DLA,PIPS, WFA etc. grow a pair. ( the jargon for that is BALLS)
