Hi,
Any thoughts regarding supply cable to my property. The t+e supply to my property is fed from the incoming mains of my neighbour and i am concerned one or both of these supplys could become overloaded as we have both recently extended our properties. On inspection my neighbours supply appears to be very old and would have been sufficient for both back when the houses consisted of only one room and kitchen.Would my elec supplier be obliged to upgrade my supply free of charge?.Measuring the L and N conducters on my t+e supply they measure about 7-8mm across and is covered with 60/80 amp fuse.

You have more issues here than just risk of overload!!

When the two houses (at a guess, where they once one big one?) were split, the DNO should have been asked to install a new supply. Who do you pay your electricity to? Your Neighbour or an energy supplier?

Aarron, I would be getting in touch with Scottish Gas straight away and see if they will do anything about it! Technically, they are 'supposed' to be responsible for the suplly, up to and including the meter, but i bet they say its down to you. You say you have just had your house extended, did the spark doing the work there not pick up on this, and the fact that your earthing conductor is too small - and who knows what it is connected to at the other end. Hopefully SG will sort it free, but i bet t they decline and say its down to you! Quite possible that they might want to move the meter and therefore get out of the responsibility for the supply cable! Whoever fitted the meter wants their backside kicked!

Indeed, meter fitters genrally are not interested in anything other than what they are doing.

Sometimes you may get one but most of the time, they have to cram as many in as possible during the day to earn money.

Well, given that the DNO are providing a earthing arrangement, they have an obligation to maintain it, right? The fact that they are providing a supply via T&E (wherever it comes from...) is also their obligation to maintain.

It doesn't matter where it lays geographically, it belongs to them. And it's sub-standard and potentially very dangerous. EQSR etc etc. They need to sort that asap. At their cost.

Had a 3ph head and meter moved on one of the pig units we were doing before Christmas , took them about 20 Min's and when they finished i was handed five lengths of seal wire and five lead seals and asked to seal it up after i had done my bit . Even left me the extra one just in case a cocked one up !
I didn't let on that i already had ten spare ones in me fuse case under the van seat from a 1ph head and meter move we had done last year , he was even more generous that time !!!!

Would the cable dimension given (7-8mm across each conductor including insulation) suggest a 10mm2 or 16mm2 T+E?, i have a 10kw shower , 2 ring mains and various other cicuits on my cu all supplied through this cable.

From memory im sure the meter was fitted after our extension was completed.Should the meter fitter not have flagged the T+E supply?.

I once had a meter fitter and the area supervisor investigating high volts and they had removed the cutout fuse and so on. Neither of them noticed the TT supply missing earth rods and the VOELCB had be replaced by a plain switch..
