Hi guys,

I have been called and asked to do some electrics for an old customer. Basically they have bought a 3 story town house (I haven't seen or been there yet) but they have advised they want to install 4 bedrooms all with electric showers in them and an electric hob oven unit. Im thinking of overload issues and im assuming that its a singe phase supply with 100amp main fuse. Are there any regs that cover this problem that I need to address.... I done a job once before in a flat and installed a relay that switched it off of the shower was ever turned on.... any advise/issues to note would be greatly appreciated

They want to put 4 x showers in which I would imagine are going to be 7.5kw or bigger
The cooker hob unit is a free standing unit which needs a 6mm 32 amp supply

Im assuming its going to be a tns system with a 1361 100 amp main fuse or less

The other job had a relay as it was a 10kw boiler so when you pulled the shower pullcord it cut the supply to the boiler so they both couldn't run at the same time but that's irrelevant and nothing to do with this job sorry

What's the loading you expect to put on this 100 amp main fuse or is that what you're expecting us to work out for you?

What does your copy of BS7671 (the big green book) tell you what regs cover this work. You do have one don't you or is it in the van that your mate's borrowed to go on a camping trip to Timbucktoo??

and finally ...... are you even an electrician or just some DIY / Handy man blagger??

PLEASE don't say you're an "Industrial Spark" who doesn't "do domestic very often" - we've already had our quota of those for this month!!

I hate it when that happens!! :dita:

Ah!! ............ there you are pet - just in time.

Right, I've got this (gas) oven cranked up to No.8 and chucked the bowl of your squirrels & stoat stew with it's cover on on the middle shelf - is that right so far?

Next I'm thinking about setting a timer for 30 mins.

Edit: and how the Hell are you online when both f you lappys are sitting here on my floor??

You may want to remind the customer that the level of water pressure within the dwelling will impact on simultaneous usage - far easier to have a combi boiler fitted enabling hot/cold mains pressure, then you may be able to run 2 showers, maybe even 3 at a push - running multiple electrical showers in a domestic dwelling is a bad idea for a number of reasons.
