my buddy is training to be a gas fitter. he is also doing a part p 'course' and reckons he will be part p registered. the course cost ÂŁ200. surely this aint right. i had another mate who is a gas fitter with part p but he didnt have a clue, ended up selling me a brand new megger multimeter for ÂŁ250 because he could barely switch it on. can we do a short gas course and start doing boiler changes???/

My brother is a gas fitter and he told me he was doing a part P course when he got a job fitting smart meters. When he went ot do it he learnt nothing about part P or installations. It was a course which was mainly about isolation

"Hello growler",

I am a Heating Engineer and I have done the Corgi Defined Scope Training and Assessment for Part P [nearly up for Renewal] - which with Competent Persons Registration enables Me to `Legally` carry out Limited Scope Electrical Works - Associated Directly with My Heating System / Gas Appliance Work.

A definite Prerequisite / Regulation for taking the Training and Assessment for `Defined Scope Part P` was that I had to have taken Training and Assessment in `Essential Electrics` - I could NOT have been accepted for the Defined Scope Part P without having Passed the Assessments on the Essential Electrics.

From Memory the Essential Electrics Training and Assessment was over ÂŁ800.00 and took a Week to complete.

I looked into this at the Time - although it made perfect sense that People would have to have SOME knowledge of Electrics before being allowed onto even a Defined Scope Training and Assessment for Part P.

It definitely was a requirement without which NO Training Provider [that I researched] would allow entry onto the Defined Scope Part P Training and Assessment.

I looked into it ONLY because at the time there was [still is] a lot of `Bad Press` about the Training Providers trying to use Propaganda / False Rumors to get People to Book Training and Assessments that were NOT going to be Required / Of any Value.

The Defined Scope Part P was over ÂŁ1000.00 and again took a Week to complete.

I cannot imagine Where the ÂŁ200.00 `Course` could EVER be available from ? - that is obviously Nonsense !

I decided to take these Training and Assessment Courses in order to be confident that any Electrical Work / Minor Fault Investigation / Testing of Electrical Connections to My Boiler and Heating Controls could be carried out in a Safe Way.

I did think at that time I would probably Wire Up My own Heating Systems - But I decided to leave it to the Professionals - My Time is better spent carrying out what I am a Professional at - Heating - Plumbing and Gas.

I have previously Posted on here that although I would legally have been able to Wire Up My own Heating Systems - I did NOT - preferring that a Professional Electrician did this Work and provided the Certificate / Notify the Work etc.

I hope that this Information is Helpful to let You realise / be reassured that your Friend absolutely CANNOT be taking ANY `ÂŁ200.00 Course` that will enable Him to become `Part P Registered` - Defined Scope or any other Scope !

Regards,

Chris

Yep it's possible! You will fnd that a lot of competent persons schemes for heating/plumbing industry offer a defined scope 'add on' for electrical works, as said within in the scoe of the trade.

This is from the OFTEC (oil) website, i'm not aware of gas safe offering a defined scope scheme but the likes of CORGI still offer this. I did a defined scope training course a few years ago, I have since completed 17th and full scope. The defined scope course is trash and I knew of a few who walked away with the ticket but still couldn't understand very BASIC electrical procedures.

The application form for
OFT 103 Defined Scope Electrical Installation & Maintenance
registration can be
downloaded here
. This registration currently costs ÂŁ199 + VAT for yearly registration. This fee includes the cost of the compulsory electrical inspection that you will have to undergo before registration on the scheme can be awarded.

"Hello sambotc",

What I wrote about were the Training and Assessments that are required BEFORE a Person can even Apply to become Part P Registered - which in My case Cost over ÂŁ1800.00.

That did NOT include the Application / Registration Fees to Corgi Competent Persons Electrical Scheme - I cannot remember off hand how much that was - I think that it was over ÂŁ300.00 [?]

You have Posted details about applying to become Registered / add an Electrical Competence Assessment to an Existing OFTEC Registration - Costing ÂŁ199.00.

Without the so called `Qualifying Assessment Passes` it is NOT possible to become a Member of an Electrical Competent Persons Scheme - Unless People have Recognised Electrical Qualifications.

If You look at the Form that you Posted the Link for you will see that there are areas on it where the Person has to Enter the Training & Assessment Passes that they have undertaken - these obviously have to be the Recognised Assessments for registering on the Defined Scope Scheme.

Regards,

Chris

EDIT: I think that I remember ELECSA - Sorry if abbrieviation is incorrect - Allow People to Apply to become Registered for Part P - IF they think they can Pass the Registration Assessment - carried out by an `Electrical Inspector / Assessor` - Further comments about this in My next Post on this Subject.

just goes to show what a shambles this part p is. the only people benefitting from it are the cowboys who ignore it and can do the job cheaper-- no certs, no notification, and the army of pen-pushers and scam providers that it has generated.

Might be worth forgetting the scam providers and doing cash CU changes for ÂŁ100 and price the the cowboys out the market.
Give it a few months of that and all the unregistered house wreckers will be back doing their window cleaning, then it will be just like it used to be. Them were the days..............
