my buddy is training to be a gas fitter. he is also doing a part p 'course' and reckons he will be part p registered. the course cost ÂŁ200. surely this aint right. i had another mate who is a gas fitter with part p but he didnt have a clue, ended up selling me a brand new megger multimeter for ÂŁ250 because he could barely switch it on. can we do a short gas course and start doing boiler changes???/
thanks for this. what i thought but wanted clarification. my buddy in question asked me to put lighting in his garage knowing i wasnt part p but said he would sign it off.. made me a feel stupid as ive been in the game 13 years and a trainee gas fitter reckons hes more electrically qualified..
IF He says that He CAN `Sign Off` Part P Electrical Work - How has He supposedly become registered with an Electrical Competent Persons Scheme ?
IF He is a `Genius` in remembering every Electrical Regulation and Expert in the Testing Requirements for Electrical Inspections etc. and also can demonstrate that His knowledge of the `Paperwork / Admin` side of Notification - and He has all of the necessary Electrical Testing Equipment - I THINK that one of the Electrical Competence Organisations - ELECSA [?] - Sorry if this abbreviation is not correct - Will allow People to Apply to be Registered and carry out a `Registration Assessment` with an Electrical `Inspector`.
BUT as far as I know the Registration Assessment would be VERY THOROUGH - BECAUSE He would NOT have the `Proof of Competence` in actual Certificate Terms - for example a Defined Scope Part P Assessment Pass - the `Inspector` would be likely to go into precise details - in order that He `Cover Himself` in NOT Passing someone for Registration who might NOT be `Fully Competent` / Safe.
The Questions on the Electrical Regulations are from Memory - `Demanding` - although demonstrating that You know the Section where You can look up a Regulation applicable to the Questions - and actually do that - does satisfy this.
Even IF He has taken this route - which would in MY Opinion make Him a VERY `Clued Up` Person in terms of Electrical Knowledge and Testing etc. [obviously this MAY be the case] - I am fairly sure that He would then have only 12 Months `grace` during which to obtain a Recognised Part P Assessment Pass - or obviously more formal Electrical Qualifications - If these can be obtained within a Year ?
He would have to produce the `Proof of Competence` - [Sorry - I know that this is a real Sore Point in the Electrical Industry - And I do agree] - in order to Remain Registered.
