A colleague of mine has passed on the following web address.

I'm not sure even if the petition gets 100,000 signatures (as is claimed to be needed for this to be addressed in parliament) if anyone will listen, but I suppose it's worth a look.

"As the general public know very little about Part P, and the increasing fact that Part P has not benefited any members except for the still trading cowboys who are not affiliated to any governing body, It needs to be addressed that the Part P system NEEDS to be changed to be in alignment with GAS SAFE making all electricians to be members of a PART P governing body. This will in turn stop unqualified "electricians" working for companies that are so called PART P registered. As dangerous electrics are as dangerous as unsafe gas installations."

INDIVIDUAL PART P MEMBERS - e-petitions

While you're in a petition-signing mood, try this one as well which was being publicised by the Electrical Safety Council at the recent Elex exhibition:
Protect You and Your Family - Keep Part P (Building Regulations) - e-petitions

"Sub-standard electrical installation work kills. Part P of the Building Regulations protect consumers having electrical installation work in their homes from poor workmanship. For more information on Part P see Building regulations : Electrical Safety Council Since Part P was introduced there has been - a 17.5% reduction in domestic fires attributable to mains wiring faults - nearly 20,000 more electrician electrical contractors are having their competence assessed and samples of their work checked regularly - a reduction in the number of unregulated persons undertaking electrical work In addition it is easier for householders to identify competent electrical installers! Please sign this petition to keep this important piece of regulation and keep the cowboy electricians out of your homes!"

What needs to be remembered is there are electricians out here (me included) who have a good few years of experience in many aspects of electrical work who are more than capable of wiring a domestic property. This forum has shown me that part P has only made the inexperienced and underqualified look legitimate.
If anyone thinks I would let a 5 day wonder come and do any wiring in my house just so it would be notified, think again. Notified does not mean safely installed and tested. No-one checks the EIC (correct me if im wrong) so what is the point.

The idea of part p is great, it's the actual working of it that sucks a fat one.
Until there is legislation in place that has really long sharp teeth that will stop Tommy at the pub "who knows what he is doing" from doing what he does.
Until the general public knows that the reason we serve a long apprenticeship is that electricity can be and is dangerous in the wrong hands.
Until the scam providers work together to promote electrical safety instead of serving themselves by simply taking our money.
Then our chosen profession (and thats how I view it guys just like law, accountancy, medicine etc etc) will continue to go downhill.
As a slight aside, do you know that hairdressing is recognised as a profession so if they have recognised status within the law, why can't we?
Rant over:)

And another thing ,
what is an electrical improver ? I've heard of an electricians mate , who is there to help the QUALIFIED TRADESMAN ,
but never an improver , sounds like a made up job to me

IF anyone caught messing with electricity who isn't an electrician should be shot ,
I had a guy ask me the other day if a 6mm cable was ok for a 10.8 kw shower
i said no
but its to late its in and tiled

Its a fact chaps. Newly "qualified sparks" and scheme "members" have produced some of the most dangerous work I've ever seen. These young lads are so full of themselves and because they are Part P registered think they kow what they are doing. I was told I cant be any good because I havnt got a Part P badge. He then proceeded to put a cu on the end of 10mts of unprotected meter tails, up a cavity and through a loft. Geez, here's me thinking of RCD's and all sorts, what do I know.
Part P is rubbish and invented by the 1% to screw more money out the tradesman, to put it their pockets.
AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH

If I hadn't spent a few years in London I'd have no idea what Part P is.

Gas Safe covers all of the UK (as far as I know?) Part P doesn't cover Northern Ireland at all (We do have NICEIC here + ECA) or Scotland.

Gas Safe Fees are a lot lower as well, in the region of £175+VAT as best I am aware. Don't know if they have extra schemes on top of that ala NICEIC.

Part P is rubbish, waste of time. Get something proper in place of it, and don't make it another money making scheme for some companies. Do it ****ing right.
