Hi all,

I passed the VRQ level 2 Cert for Domestic installers 500/4385/7 in November 2010, just after that i was made redundant.
Now i am in a financial position to carry on training I am 39 so will need to pay for it myself.

I would like to carry out domestic only, all electrical wiring and including consumer unit replacement and testing with self cert.

Can somebody please tell me the next steps i need to achieve this so i can budget financially.

I have spoken to a couple of governing bodies and am more confused than ever.
I understand I need to do the 17th Edition exam next, but where do i go from there?

1, VRQ Level 2
2, 17th Edition exam
3, Register with Napit, etc
4,?
5,?
6,?

Thank you in advance its much appreciated

The VRQ you speak about, is only recognised by the scam providers. A 5 day course does not make you competent as an electrician (or anything else come to that) to go into peoples homes and start messing around with the electrical installation. So you really need C&G 2364/65 or C&G 2357 if you want a qualification that actually means something to anyone in the electrical industry...

Once and for all, there is no such thing as a Domestic Electrician, and certainly no such thing as a Domestic Installer!! You are either an Electrician or you're NOT!!

Someone needs to pull their finger out a get rid of this part P/ domestic installer ****. I can't be the only one who is fed up of these daily posts... amusing at times to view but crippling the industry

Thankyou for your great advice, i will look into this.

The qualifications you will need are..
C & G 2330 or equivalent level 2 and level 3 (whatever it is these days?)
C & G 2357 NVQ level 3
Achivement Measure 2
C & G 17th Edition

Thankyou for your great advice, i will look into this.

those 4 should be a good base.

I am constantly looking at these threads lol

yeah , we can all picture it now..............

maybe "food" for thought for when you next think you can put up a cruel photo of me and think you've got away with it.
dont go there.
just dont.
;-)

Er! Thanks I think!

I ment no disrespect mate. Don't take what i said as knocking you. It's the system that is wrong. Letting guys Into the industry working alone with little experience and not the necessary tickets to call themselves a qualified electrician. I don't know your background so you may be a top sparky and really know your stuff but for one reason or another never completed an apprenticeship. But there are so many guys that have been on here asking crazy questions who are about to re-wire someone's house or carry out work they just aren't competent to do. As long as you know your competent then no one can ask much more. Finding an employed position with the qualifications you have just won't happen. Good luck

What you need before any of these courses is experience working with/for and around good electricians

How many years of that have you had

After 5 years of that every day and four years at college running beside it I was considered qualified, and when i look back now i was still clueless

Most of the guys on here undertook a similar route, do please don't feel your being treated too harshly when you assume that by paying a fast track college a few thousand to sit a couple of multiple choice exams, it will suddenly turn you into a qualified and competent electrician

Weather your working domestic or commercial it's all the same, doing only domestic work doesn't give you carte Blanche to be less qualified

Domestic installer is the most ridiculous term ever thought up
