Out of intrest who comprises of the supposed 35% pass rate on the 2391 - put another way how many are time served sparks and how many are
Di's Electrical Trainee, every Electrical Trainee course seems to inc 2391 and lots of Di's on here have it so just wondered if more Di's pass than timeserved?, just a topical debait on 5 week in a classroom versus experience.

I reckon the pass rate is probably more to do with quality of teaching and general aptitude of the student rather than past experience.

My tutor made a comment that he has more problems with time served sparks who think they know what they are doing than 5WWs who know they don't.......

I suppose if you want to learn and your taught well in the classroom most things are possible.

agreed. There is no substitute for experience but a willingness to learn is essential both in the classroom and out on the job. Experience will come with time.

At least that is what I told myself after I scewed up my 2395 last night :(

Sorry to here that, why choose the 2394/5 over the 2391 out of intrest?

thanks. I might just be being pessimistic but I made quite a few stupid mistakes like not reading the question properly. Even more frustrating because I found the practical fairly straightforward and got 95% in the multi-choice exam (and that was with one question that did not have the correct answer listed!) so I expected to do better.

anyway. 2395 because the college was pushing the new exams to be honest. I have to admit it might have been better to go with 2391 as there was very little info from C&G and so the course was pretty much a 2391 course but with 2395 exams. It was a bit distracting revising on 2391 papers and having to remember 2395 is periodics only.

I'm not doing 2394. I can't see the need for the domestic stuff I do, particularly as we have covered all the stuff on our course anyway.

I'm booked in for the 2391 in may/june as I didnt want to get lumbered with the 2394/5 cost, I think I'll be ok on the written more worried about nerves on the practical.

I know what you mean about nerves, I always get nervous when someone is looking at what I am doing and tend to cock it up and forget things.
Use your own instrument in the exam if you can and practice beforehand and I am sure you will be fine. The key is to be able to do it quickly as time is short but there is time to correct mistakes and still finish on time if you just crack on and don't panic.

Things to remember are:
- Remove parallel paths when doing bonding checks. I had a o/c main bond which looked ok with supplimentary bonding in place.
- make sure you test the motor circuit all the way through. I had a low IR (I think) on the contactor to socket section.
- check Zs values against Max Zs, not forgetting the 0.8 factor and careful of the MCB types.
- fill in as much of the cert as possible 1st and ask questions if you think there is something missing or you don't understand about the installation.
- careful of the safety stuff. You can mess up testing as long as it isn't safety related and still get away with repeating it.
I am assuming the 2391 practical is the same as the 2395 I did of course.....

I'd always thought of the 2391 or equiv to be the thing you work towards kind off the pinnacle of your installation training - years exp and all that, but really anyone off the street can do it with a good teacher with a few days training and adding to that you havent picked up on the bad habbits of years on the job.

Alex anyone can be trained to pass an exam really, I'm sure with enough tutoring I could very well pass a few medical based ones, the difference is when you have someone sitting on an operating table and someone passes you the scalpel, and say off you go son

The same with us, yes you can train someone to pass the 2395 but then put a meter in his/her hand and open up a 32 way TP+N 40 yr old panel with wires going to the ying-yang and say right son sort that lot out

I passed the 2391 straight after finishing 2330. Didn't find it too bad but I've only worked to 17th edition
so didn't need to change a lifetimes habits i.e names of instruments etc. I think it helps if you have just finished college for the theory exam as you are used to revising and half the stuff you already know but you can find the practical a bit of a challenge. Having a lot of experince should make the practical easy but then you have to get back in the habit of studying and possibly changing a lifetimes habit with regards terminology, procedures etc.

I thought I would get it out of the way while it was all fresh.

Unfortunatley true Malcolm but the fact remains they still have a 2391 after four days and i'm only prepairing now after 4 years (alright not the quickest person but im getting there!!!!) remember my tutor telling us in the first year that with lots of hard work we could get the 2391 after 3 years !!!, I honestley dont begrudge them but do feel there should be more stringent entry req...
