Out of intrest who comprises of the supposed 35% pass rate on the 2391 - put another way how many are time served sparks and how many are
Di's Electrical Trainee, every Electrical Trainee course seems to inc 2391 and lots of Di's on here have it so just wondered if more Di's pass than timeserved?, just a topical debait on 5 week in a classroom versus experience.

Alex that is a great point. Years ago I had to do my basic electrical training in stages and a set order, B and C then HNC and onto HND, and you could not do the higher without the lower.

The problem with the City and Guilds seem to be that there is no criteria for our type of exams. The 2392/2394 is looked at as a "feeder" into the 2391/2395, but in reality it isn't because they have been identified now as two separate entities, one is initial verification the over full testing and inspection.

So you really can't set a pre standard to them. I remember years ago when I did the 2400 when the 16th came in, you could not do that unless you had the 2391-001 as it was then, but I believe that is no longer the case, it is still recommended you have the 2391-10 before you do the 2391-20, and they give concessions that if you have you don't have to do the practical again, but if you didn't have the practical you can do it during the 2391-20/2396

Alex anyone can be trained to pass an exam really, I'm sure with enough tutoring I could very well pass a few medical based ones, the difference is when you have someone sitting on an operating table and someone passes you the scalpel, and say off you go son

The same with us, yes you can train someone to pass the 2395 but then put a meter in his/her hand and open up a 32 way TP+N 40 yr old panel with wires going to the ying-yang and say right son sort that lot out

100% agree. But then it was the same when I did my degree. 3 years of learning and a nice bit of paper but it didn't tell me how to work in an engineering enviroment. I had to work that out on the job ;)
We really shouldn't loose sight of the fact training just gives an understanding of the theory. Doing it in practice (in any job) is the only real way of becoming properly competent. The difference between knowledge and experience!

But you need both and doing the training 1st then gaining the experience 2nd has got to be the best way. Imagine putting that 40yr old panel in front of someone who didn't even know the principles of inspection and test.....

That 35% is an average pass mark compiled from the results of everyone who takes the exam. At my local college the pass rate is more like 80 - 90% but you must have a full course such as 2330, a regs course (2382) and sign a declaration to say you are an experienced electrician before they will let you enrol. The idea is that the 2391 doesn't teach you how to 'test' (you should know that already) but goes into some of the finer details such as 3 phase safe isolation, testing SELV installations, earth electrode testing, understanding results etc.

Shame all the other training providers dont take the same stance...

Yes. Yes it is. At that college you have to have a technical certificate before they'll let you do the 2382. And before you start the technical certificate (which takes 3 years on day release) you have to do an assessment which takes about 2 hours including spatial awareness and maths tests, a practical assessment, colour vision test and an interview.

I like to think a 2391 from Bournemouth & Poole College actually means something as I'm sure the lecturers there do.

Unfortunately it seems a sharp contrast to these new-fangled training centres where they'll call anyone an electrician for the right price.

... but really anyone off the street can do it with a good teacher with a few days training and adding to that you havent picked up on the bad habbits of years on the job.

You might think that but your wrong.
Any Electrical Trainee can happily be trained to do initial testing of his new kitchen ring circuits , its fairly straight forward stuff.
but doing a periodic inspection on old tatty wiring on a big hotel 400v installation is
something else , it takes years to get there with no short cuts.

It was 6 years after leaving college before i took my 2391 , the closed book written exam
is a killer , its this that most fail on.
when i did it in 1997 the pass mark for the written exam was only 40% which shows how tough it was.
