Passing through a vertical noggin

Hi guys quick question

im an apprentice electrician but i only do industrial so domestic project is alien to me.

if you are coming down a stud wall with a supply to socket for example & need to pass through a vertical strap of wood whats the best procedure. I know a cable needs to be 50mm deep etc. do i drill all the way through the noggin with a hole saw & just run the cable down through the gap. Or do you need to do more eg reseal the gap back to its original fire rating or cover the gap with metal channel guard.

All answers appreciated

thanks

don't you mean a horizontal noggin? if so, just drill it and pass cable through. do not attempt to seal hole with metal. and, as long as the cable is within safe zone and 522.6.101 is complied with it don't need to be 50mm deep.

dont use a holesaw.

use a flat wood bit, most holesaws are made for wood or masonry.

no need to fill center with fire mastic except inbetween floors (plasterboard iis rated 30mins)

bloody good holesaws in your kit.

I like ck fast 4 bits when doing timber frame jobs and have loads to drill ,makes my apprentices more productive :-) and they don't blunt as easy as a spade bit when they hit nails lol

I must admit I'm struggling with the concept of a vertical noggin.

As for shankys masonry holesaws they could save me a whole load of ballache with my core drill. :)

i use a 5/8" HSS drill bit with the shank turned down to 1/2". goes through wood 4 x faster than anything else.

Sorry guys i meant a horizontal noggin. So notch a hole & pass through as long as it is run in a safe zone & the 50mm deep can be ignored as ling as circuit is RCD protected?

Thanks guys

Aye, but it's a damned sight easier to resharpen a spade bit than it is to resharpen your CK Fastbit after its hit nails!! ;)

To sharpen your flat bit, you can use something like this:

but your Fastbit needs something like this:

....... and we all have one of those in our toolboxes don't we??
