As far as the tester is concerned: Dont bother getting one of those downloadable things as its a big outlay and you need shedloads of work to justify it. You could go for the seaward 150 which is easy to use (has instant pass/fail on screen) and is light weight too. As for NIC pat tester accreditation or whatever they call it i dont see why you need it?..........

As far as i know :if you can prove competency (by way of experience or ticket) then i dont see why you cant just get on with it. Try to convince him that you dont need to be NIC or anyone else for that matter. Why should you spend money unneccessarily? Get your insurance or whatever you need and start pat testing if thats what you want to do: Personally, i would just use it as a means to an end. Use it to finance other courses (such as 2391 etc) as you might find pat testing mind numbingly dull after a while mate....its your call........
Best o luck.
Glenn.

well he has 7 cafe's and few other premises so think it wouldfill my slack days and yeah im up for 2391 this year as well as level 3 aswell as work full time, the other half as telectrix says is going nuts cause i love electricty

Absolute rubbish!! Even the course you have just paid out good money for, is one of those courses that no-body actually needs, especially electricians!! It's just another of these numpty Scam money making things, designed to convince the ill informed that it is needed, there-by perpetuating the money scam course. ...C&G should be totally ashamed of themselves, by jumping on this bandwagon.

Of course the Scam providers love it, there making money out of something no-one needs!!!

Not if your going to do these PAT tests in full it's not. What about the class 11 stuff??

Depends on what sort of service you intend giving your clients, the bare basics or the full Monty!! I have a Seaward 2000i back in Cyprus, that i keep upto scratch calibration wise every year. This is the type of test kit you should looking at on eBay and the like.... they're built like a brick outhouse, ...and dirt cheap, these days...lol!!

If your MFT does earth leakege (mine does) then thats useful as you might have sensetive equipment that cant withstand the 500. Its effectively an IR test mate. Earth bonding needs to be carried out at 1.5 times the value of the fuse so for instance: your pat tester does earth bonding at say 100mA, 4A and 25A (like mine) and you had a piece of portable current using equipment on a BS1363 plug fitted with a 3A BS1362 fuse then you go 3Ax1.5=4.5A so you would earth bond test it at 25A.........

Theres your answer then........Dont forget that as with a fixed installation inspection precedes testing with the piece/s of portable current using equipment isolated/disconnected from the supply and remember that if you have to replace a plug (BS 1363) be sure to use a newer type (one with insulation for a portion of the line and neutral pins) but only if you have to replace an older type because of damage. It works the same as for fixed installations: If it complied when it was first fitted then theres no need to condemn it (as long as its in good order) but the minute you remove it you have to condemn it and replace with the newer type..........

Basically EAWR states persons to be competent. For qualified sparks this should be enough for PAT testing using IEE book In service inspection and testing of electrical equipment. C&G course for those with little or no experience or managers/supervisors who are designated the responsible person for their employer. So PAT course is not always required but does help to prove competence.
