Just the reaction i was expecting

I'm going to start all my future posts by saying "WARNING - SENSE OF HUMOUR REQUIRED"

Just to clear things up, i only started PAT testing because of customer requests. If i get asked if i offer this service i say yes but more often than not i dont get the work because i get under cut. I only did between 10 - 15 PATS last year and i have only done 3 this year so whats does that tell you??

May be your "lol" was taken in the wrong context but then again was it needed

Thought this was a serious thread not sure where the sense of humour is required in this subject as it is no joke

By all means start your posts with a warning if you don't want a response

I think this is a very serious matter too, i was just trying to brighten up the conversation.

As i said, i am in favour of reform within the PAT industry so maybe i shouldn't have been so defensive and i apologise if my post was taken in the wrong context, after all we are on the same side (i think)

Just did the latest C&G 2377 for In Service Testing in Jan and was useful for me as I haven't done any appliance testing for a long while. This should be quite straight forward for a sparky, made complicated by fancy instruments to measure, download, bluetooth e.t.c.

This area is a bit like everything that gets touched by clever people - it grows as they come up with more ideas about how to make things better / safer / quicker ( and keep themselves in employment perhaps (yes I am cynical ).

As PAT testing really started for equipment connected by flexible cords which are often subject to abuse / strain , e.g. everyone has seen examples of dodgy repairs or flex pulled out of plug tops, then perhaps it should be left as that and the debate about all the fixed or immovable items should be relative to other inspections or reports? Just a thought.

Although it appears to be a bit of a sterile debate as the CoP 3rd edition covers all the other types of equipment already - portable - moveable - hand held - stationary - fixed or built in!

Remember a PAT tester automatically links the line and neutral conductors together to prevent damage to the equipment when testing IR whereas a MFT doesn't.
I do all my IR testing with L&N linked together and then test to earth. If I need to split them, then the test is at 240v and not 500v. I mark this up on all test reports. Discussed it 2 years ago with Scheme Provider Examiner and had he no problems with this method.

There are far too many vulnerable electronic modules on houses today and if anything is not working then you get the blame. Using this technique you can argue back with confidence that your testing did not cause a problem.

Sorry if I've gone slightly off topic!
